That sounds like fun!
Every little thing helps, carrying boards, holding the drywall to the walls while they nail them to the studs, etc.
I don't know how to do shingles, but when my brothers and hubby did my moms roof, I laid out the shingles where all they had to do was line them up and nail them down.

Re: extreme? maybe
Kind of mixed feelings about the whole "extreme" thing…A co-worker volunteered last month doing tile work for the master bath on a home built here in CT…After hearing his story about the experience, I don’t think it’s something I’d volunteer for…Don’t get me wrong…I’m sure everyone who’s involved in the process has admirable intentions…and the way they go about it is probably the only way it makes it economically possible to build these homes…But being involved in the building trade… IMO, it’s really a half-ass way to build a house…It’s a nice concept, helping those who need and deserve a new home…Just wish they could find a way to do it and still deliver a "quality" home..That being said…I guess something is better than nothing…if you got the time…go for it AA….

Ha! Ha!
Inexperienced AND a volunteer?
What fun! ...For me.
I can fix most.
Last incident I recall with a grin was a helper given $36 worth of product who spent a morning 'sprucing things up' according to instruction, by his supervisor who was avoiding our wages.
$1,200 later we had corrected his indisgressions.
In other cases, I've seen someone purchase a few books, then, hundreds of dollars of very expensive tools.
The workmanship, fit and finish, was magnificent. A museum quality product.
You never know until you try!
And if you learn from your errors, so much the better!
