The economy is poor.many need to keep that car on the road longer.today i found out a tip i had never heard of before. i was driving my old ford down the road and hit a pothole. with many govts strapped for cash lots of roads are in bad cond. potholes abound. anyway a short distance later my car lost all power. i had to pull over and call for roadside assistance.i really didnt put 2 and 2 together.not associating my problem with the pothole. an honest tow driver diagnosed the problem immediately. i said i checked the throttle body fuel injection and the car isnt getting any fuel.i guess the fuel pump quit. i was looking forward to losing several days off my vaca and a few hundred dollar repair bill. he sez, have u checked the fuel cutoff switch? the what? THE FUEL CUTOFF SWITCH. APPARENTLY ,even cars 20 plus yrs old .if it has electronic fuel pump many have this switch. designed to shut the fuel pump off in case of an accident to help prevent fire.which i guess is a good idea.HOWEVER, IT CAN ALSO BE TRIGGERD BY HITTING A LARGE POTHOLE. try losing power in traffic after hitting a large pothole.not too safe. I THOUGHT I KNEW A LOT ABOUT CARS.BEEN WORKING ON AND MESSING WITH MY 48 YRS.BUT I DIDNT KNOW THIS. after tipping the towman, he showed me where is located and how to push reset button. my car started immediately !! and he sez. MANY CARS GET JUNKED or have fuel pump replaced at big expense when all they really need is to have this switch reset. MANY DISHONEST SHOPS WILL SIMPLY RESET BUTTON AND CHARGE FOR FUEL PUMP REPLACEMENT. MY car is a 1989 ford escort.the button was in the trunk between the carpet and wiretied to the inside body. i want to share this with everyone.but since im not into blogging elsewhere .only on treasure sites,i post it here .if ur into car sites or somethin help spread the news about this.this took me awhile to write .i aint a good typist.but if it help save one person some money.well worth it.

i wonder how many other hidden secrets like this the newer cars have?
maybe many more mech compitent people might know about this but the avg person doesnt. i looked in my owners manual and it sez zip about this.i think this info should be in the owner manual

Being a female, yes, I knew this.

When my car died on us several years ago that was the first thing I tried, but still had to get towed home. After 2 or 3 weeks with car still being down, we got a part from the junkyard. Car started up and ran fine that day. Took it up north the next day and had to get it towed back home. Brother in law ended up dropping the gas tank and replaced fuel pump and filter. Since then the car has been fine except you got to watch the miles so you don't run out of gas. Something happened when the work was being done and my gas gauge is off a little. I got the parts at cost from auto part store and labor was free.

Nice to have a hubby and other family members that are mechanics. Saves us ALOT of money.

it takes a very big pothole to set this off. depending on the sensitivity of the device which varies by manufacturer, condition of the vehicles suspension, and age. i dont recommend trying to set it off.
