I'd rather be caught by the law with it than be caught by some gangbanger without it. Seriously though, you'd go to jail if caught while the thugs run free. I will never again go to Kalifornia for that very reason.

You can transport any firearm from California to Arizona (and reverse) as long as the gun(s) are in the trunk of your car...
We do it and simply by removing the firing pins, bullets, and the like...also use trigger locks.
Border inspection may ask for a declaration.

AZ is an "open carry" state.
Here's a reference:
http://www.handgunlaw.us/documents/USOffLimitsA-M.pdf
================================================== =====
This I got from a police officer in AZ:
You may carry open or 'partially concealed' without a permit. 'Partially concealed' is as long as the gun itself or a portion of the holster is recognizable, you are not technically carrying 'concealed.'
Now to the vehicle laws. You are allowed a gun anywhere in the passenger compartment as long as it is in a holster. Glove box, map pocket, dashboard, under the seat, etc. etc. as long as it's in a holster.
The minute you take the gun out of a holster, it can only be in the glove box, map pocket, or open view, or you are carrying a concealed weapon and committing misconduct with a weapon. It's a class I misdemeanor.
An officer 'may' arrest you anytime you commit misconduct with a weapon.
================================================== ===========
AA Batt, personally I recommend in your type of situation that you keep your loaded pistol in an unlocked briefcase on the seat beside you. If you get pulled over or are otherwise approached by one of my brothers in blue, you can just give the locking dials a spin......
We can't search inside a locked compartment, even if it's within your immediate reach, without Probable Cause. As long as you don't get arrested for something or give permission to look in the case, it won't be an issue..............
The weapon is not considered "readily accessible" if it is in a locked container. And no-one but you knows "when" the container was "locked". This can cover you wherever you go in a vehicle.

The ammo must be separate from the firearm.A locked case also.
I've carried my guns to and from Arizona with no problems.
The Ag Checkpoints as far as I know, needs no declaration.
Unless you have plants.fresh fruit in the vehicle. Then they'll confiscate.
Don't act nervous for any reason. As you are not doing anything wrong.
I will take Arizona anyday of the week.

just remember, you have a better chance of your wifes mouth going off than your gun.
Both take reasonable care and maintenance.
Both can be locked in your car trunk.
Both have chambers that can be carefully fed......................the gun's chamber and the wifes mouth...

Post Script
An article in todays newspapers reported that Phoenix has had about 3000 armed kidnappings in the last 3 years, some are for ramsom.
Drug cartels may be related.
So Arizona may become the next frontier for the US/Mexico drug wars.

"So Arizona may become the next frontier for the US/Mexico drug wars"
whew..." may become"?
that happened decades ago...where were you concerned citizens then?
some racist president declares war on drugs...suddenly drug smugglers are carring weapons...duh.
that was a fine move connecting weapons to drugs...even though they have no more to do with each other than gasoline and space flight.
since the declared war on drugs...and typical hand sitting by the last four or five administrations...everyone on both sides of the 'war on drugs' are running around the desert packing military grade weapons...
people back east now seem to think arizona has a problem.
transparent self serving xenophobic paranoid mainiacs, stay out of arizona...

Question: I have an AZ CCW Permit. Can I carry my handgun while in California?
Answer: California does NOT recognize the Arizona CCW permit. You cannot carry a concealed weapon in California unless you have a California CWP. In addition, open carry of a firearm in any incorporated area of California is also prohibited by law. If you do decide to bring your handgun with you to California, it must be unloaded and in a locked container if it is in the passenger compartment of your vehicle. It can also be unloaded and locked in the trunk of your car.
yeap it is important that you check and read up on each state your traveling thru, some do recognize another's CWP and some do not.
Some even though they recognize another's CWP, they have different guidelines on the types of weapons, how to carry etc.
Kinda like the 3 moves law you hear about, you will be ok if it takes you 3 moves to get it, that is a myth and untrue.
Most states as far as carring a non permitted weapon require it to be unloaded, in a case, and locked
but again that is most not all so read up and be knowledgeable
