The 4-H used to be a big deal around here but I don't even think they have it around here anymore.

It's possible they are. They used to meet at a school when I was a kid and I went a few times with a friend but never really got involved.

Luckily, here in these parts, 4-H is still alive and well. With events every single month of the year, and, to everybody's credit, the events are well-attended by the local population and from the surrounding areas.

Me too ! I showed sheep, did canning, baking, clothing ..... the most fun was baking and showing sheep at the county and state fairs!
We also did rick roping ... the 101 ranch was here and the former trick roper had started teaching it, so he also taught our group.
This is the day the Lord hath made we shall rejoice and be glad in it!

Re: A little education on 4-h

We do try to contribute to the 4-H whenever we can. A lot of the kids here are definitely the ranchers of the future, and they can do a lot of things with cattle and sheep and pigs - not to mention all the other activities (like the canning, etc). I also love seeing the older kids helping the younger ones - which we seem to see quite often.

Heck, I started canning when I was young, and sewing, and showing livestock - and today, I still can every year. (and love it).

That IS one of the best things - it wasn't just the "boys" who did such-and-such, and it wasn't just the girls doing such-and-such.

(a refreshing idea when I was younger, when many organizations separated what the girls could do, and the boys could do). Even in the schools, when I was younger - girls could not take shop classes or mechanical drawing. They could join the FFA (Future Farmers of America), but the girls were limited to things like cooking, the thread counts of towels and the like - and not allowed to do some of the other things.

I have never seen that in any of our local 4-H groups - not then - and not now.

Agreed.....Especially with my wife being the Director. Her favorite slogan.....Girls Rock!
Before we came here to take this facility over we were in the Colorado Mountains running the Girl scout center.
The good thing about the all girl or all boy thing is that there is no distraction you know? They get to be themselves. I see the kids here in the summer primping and trying to wear perfume/axe cologne and such.
And I find plastic combs everywhere! LOL Oh well, camp is supposed to be fun. It's something that stays with you a lifetime.

Cool 4-H. Put Fossis' name up there between Reba McIntire and Martina McBride. I worked a couple of shows for Reba just before she broke real big. I visited with her in the dressing room and of all things we just talked about southeast Oklahoma. One of the best you got there on the list is Roy Acuff. Bet not many folks remember him now. Y'all keep up the good work!

RGINN, Roy Acuff had a lot of great songs. Two good ones that he had were SUNSHINE SPECIAL and THE WRECK ON THE HIGHWAY.

Re: A little education on 4-h

Reba is one heck of a person, too. (as are her parents).

Our friend bought one of her ranches in Oklahoma, and when we were visiting our friends, we went to the local hangout (which has one of the very best "catfish fries" on Friday night - yum).

Its a complete family/friends kind of hangout - and they came in later, while we were still there (its one of those places where you stay for a couple of hours and chat and eat), and they were all just -------- regular folks. She was already a "star" (this happened just 2 years ago), and it is strange to be able to talk to someone like Reba, acting like she's known you forever - from across a salad bar! Her parents are just the same, down to earth - they still ranch, and are also involved in 4-H events (and other programs for younger folks).
