Why don't these guys have guns to fight off hijackings?

NAIROBI, Kenya – Somali pirates seized a ship carrying fertilizer from the U.S. in the Indian Ocean and a British-flagged chemical tanker in the heavily patrolled Gulf of Aden — the first merchant vessel to be hijacked in the gulf in nearly six months, officials said Tuesday.

My whole crew and myself would be packing if I were a captain, they need to be armed.

You are correct Rando! It kinda reminds me of the situation down here in Atlanta. The Georgia Tech campus is located in the middle of downtown Atlanta and the Tech kids are being mugged left and right by the urban animals that "stay" all around the campus. The school tells the kids that they cannot have guns. Sounds like volunteer victimization to me. We are teaching whole generations of people how to NOT be self reliant. What a shame... Gpurs.

I Don't care who is on Board these boats,
I say don't pay Ransoms.
instead of Giving the Pirates Millions
split it between the Ships
Crews Families.

and Don't allow Trade with Somalia.

& Bomb the Pirate Boats.

Eventually they would Give up.

Re: Why don't these guys have guns to fight off hijackings?

WARNING: This may get "wordy". There are ways to fight them but, again, it costs money. As you said, it was the first ship hijacked in 6 months in that one area so there are hundreds that DIDN'T get hijacked so how much protection are you willing to pay for given the odds? Down deep I figure the shipping company could care less about the crew; their money is in the ship and cargo. Crewmembers you can find on the piers looking for work. That's another problem. If the crewmembers were constant and could be trained on the use of specific weapons and trained as a team on tactics, as was the case where the Navy snipers took out the 3 lowlifes in the lifeboat a while back, the crews could be a formidable force but, with the multinational crews on many of the vessels, it would not be effective. Just the fact that they are multinational crews is a security risk in itself. Many ships are stopped at sea due to the scumballs using RPG's. Actually, if you stop because of that, once their small craft was alongside, you could begin firing on them. The RPG would be too close to the ship and would cause injury or death to the pirates themselves or the shots would most likely ricochet off the ships side because they couldn't aim at the ship broadside. The ship's railings could also be sensitized/electrofied to either signal intrusion or actually electrofy intruders or any number of other actions could be taken.
We could also take a lesson from Israel. When they got tired of all the dimwit Palestinian suicide bombers that would kill themselves for a few thousand bucks to buy their families a nice house, Israel started looking at the 4 by 8-foot pictures of the dumba$$ "martyrs" the families would parade around town with after a bombing and they would target that families house. For some reason no one wanted their family members to be "martyrs" anymore. Follow the money around the little coastal towns of Somalia and do the same thing. Our government is so afraid of another "Blackhawk Down" incident it isn't funny. Too bad Somalia doesn't have a little oil we could use. :icon_thumleft:

They were armed until the UN outlawed it. Just like they
want to ban private ownership of weapons worldwide.
That makes it lots easier for the thugs and murderers
and socialists to gain and keep control. Experts predict
that within two years weapons will be outlawed in the
US and that the feds will manage to seize up to 25%
of them before the Revolution starts. Many are going
in the ground now and many elderly people are becoming
avid gun collectors. Change we can believe in.
