A nagging question in the back of my cob webbed mind. Can you flatten a diamond with a hammer like you can with gold? Or will it shatter into many smaller diamonds :tongue3:?.......NGE

Gold is 'malleable', meaning that it can be shaped with a hammer, and diamonds are not - period.

They will shatter into small chunks of worthless diamonds.

So the value in a diamond relies on the craftmanship of the cutter.
I have 4-5 diamonds in my toolbox, 1/3 - 1/2 carat that I use to dress grinding wheels.
Like someone said- DeBeers and Russia have Lots of diamonds saved up so is a false market.
Other gemstones are much rarer so have more real value.

Gold is gold. If it is made into something it may be worth even more than spot gold prices.
Have never seen spot diamond prices.

Diamond market is a 'false market' all right. There is enormous profits in it, just not for us common folk.

You can't play in it, there being no reasonable place to sell them, unlike gold.

My guess is that nothing under half a carat is worth anything, and above that at maybe 30% of 'appraised value'.

solar cells are made from silicone and they generate so where does that leave it?

" Where rubies could be glass " :O.K.

Pure Silicon is a Dielectric. (NONE CONDUCTOR)

It has to be Doped with other materials to conduct or become a Semi Conductor.

Solar Cells are Layered Materials.

Photons, Knock Electrons loose from one material and Migrate to another.

I guess it all depends on who is buying them. If you sell your gold and there is diamonds in them they will not give you anything for the diamonds. So make sure you take them out before you sell.

Pus I have not had very good luck on a decent price on my diamonds. I still have them and I will hold on them until I have some nice ones and proably have a nice ring made for my daughter.....Matt

You probably know this, but if you are selling gold from jewelry, you will receive penny weight value, NOT market value for pure gold..

I found a place that buys gold jewlry, and placer etc.
95% spot.
The diamonds they said should be removed as they would pay nothing for them.
A nice ring I had with a bunch of little real diamonds (tested) was worth $26.

Don't forget that DeBeers has a near monopoly on the supply of diamonds. Supposedly they have tons of them locked up in vaults just to keep the price high. I would never view diamonds as a safe "investment."
So does that guy in Africa billions of diamonds..... worthless
