Martha Washington is the only woman whose portrait has appeared on a U.S. currency note.
The nickname "greenback" originated as a name for Demand Notes, non-interest notes with green backs issued by the United States in 1861 to finance the Civil War.
The Bureau of Engraving and Printing produces 38 million notes a day with a face value of approximately $541 million.

Hmm $541 million a day in new money. Now if we only knew how much money they destroyed each day, then we might get some idea of how much a factor this is in creating inflation. Best wishes, George (MN)

Re: ***STRANGE FACTS THAT MOST DON'T KNOW
During the Civil War, groups of soldiers returning from a battle, would display placards depicting how many were killed on the latest mission. If the placard read 9-K it meant 9 were killed. If none were killed it would read 0-K. That's where the term "OK" came from.
Back during the horse and wagon days the haulers would carry a bell on their wagons so they could be heard at night. If you broke down, and someone stopped to help you out, it was custom to give up your bell to the person that helped you. The term "I'll be there with bells on" means not only will I be there but I'll be helping others along the way.
