Is it just the magnetic field in the molten core changing or is the realistate changing too?

Just the field as far as I know, but it could wander around for decades or hundreds of more years before reversing. Afterwards it could reverse again and flip-flop back and forth somewhat rapidly a few times before it settles down. They've studied the magnetic fingerprints in rock and know how these reversals behave in general.
