When I Was A Kid...

In light of the recent heavy snowfall in my area, I got to thinking about when I was a kid.
No school! Snow! Sledding! Sniffles, Colds!
Used to get wax coated chicken boxes from the grocer who was a neighbor. Cafeteria trays work good, too. Hitch up an old car hood upside down to the tractor and go flying down the country road.
Ice skating. To this day I cannot rollerskate, but can still keep from hurting myself on ice skates.

Yep I remember the car hood. About six of us got on and old Buick hood and went down a very steep long hill in a sheep pasture. We ended up a lot further than we expected, right into the sheep fence that brought us to a halt. Everyone fine except my brother in law who was several years older. He got his ear cut almost off. This was his idea.
Yeah we had a lot of fun back then. It's a wonder I'm still alive to tell about it.
Enjoy each and every day, we're only here for a little while.

Hanging on to city bus bumpers and "skiing" through the streets on snowy nights. Our record was five (hanging on at once), the guys
on the end usually ended up a sopping mess from the tire splash.

Back then the police might jack you a bit between smirks (vs taking your dripping-wet azz home in their clean squad), hate to see what
the fine would be nowadays.

We did the 'car hood sleds' on old strip pit tailing piles, we cut off a few 'good sized saplings' on some days. :P

I remember that too. My dad in his 56 ford station wagon with wood grain on the sides. Us boys on our sleds tied to the bumper with a long rope going over the back roads. Boy that sure was fun. My gawd It's a wonder that we are all still alive today.

When I was a kid I remember when the rap music started and Brittany Spears was popular,I listened to Elvis. I remember the Game Boys starting and the Ipod starting too. You can tell I'm not that old,just 15 and I still sled ride!!

The last thing I remember was My Mom Says Get out of my house and Go play!!! It was raining and My brothers and I were irritating my mom!! But mom it Raining out?? She said Go play in the D@mn Barn!!!! That was the first mistake!!!


The next one was of my brothers darring me to climb up in to the rafters, As I got out to the center of the main beam My youngest Brother came out Behind Me and then next thing I remember is some one Lauging and throwing water On me Found out later I was pushed off the rafter by my little Brother!!! Nothing broken Landed In a pile of tires 30 feet below me!!!!

Making stone wheels and rolling them down the hill, sticking our tongues out at the dinosaurs and running , clubbing our girl friends unconscious and having drag races with them , drawing pornography on the cave walls .......... aaaah ......... the memories , todays kids just don't know what fun is .

I remember making snow forts, ice skating, Making snow angels. Growing up in the woods of Upper peninsula
of Mich. I was always climbing trees, making bows and arrows, sling shots. I always had my eye out for good
sling shot crotches anytime I was in the woods. Sometimes I would trail animals in the woods and I always had
my dog with me. In my early teens we lived only a couple miles from The village of Gulliver and I'd walk there
with my dog and my friends and I would walk on stilts or play stretch with our pocket knives. We also did a lot
of swimming and fishing. During the last two summers up there I was 14 and 15 years old and I had a job
working for the school teacher, weeding her flower and vegetable garden. I worked from 9:00 to 12:00, three
days a week then go play with my friends for a couple of hours. She would give me a sandwich at lunch time.
Also the last year and a half I had a job at the little church we attended. There were metal folding chairs for
pews and I would go in before each meeting and straighten all the chairs and make sure there was a Bible and
Hymn Book on every other chair. It was also my job to sweep the floor whenever it needed it and in colder weather,
I would light the oil space heaters before each meeting, one in front, one in back. They paid me $5.00 a month
to do that. I saved my money and bought a good used bike in Manistique for $10.00. I was real proud of that
bike because I earned it myself. Our church didn't have any locks on the doors, so I would go in and do my work
and leave and never had to think about locking it when I left. At that time, most people didn't have locks on their
doors. We left that area and moved down to this area in 1954 when I was 15 years old. Wow, I didn't mean
to make this so long. I guess I kinda got to reminiscing . Excuse me.

Gads, depends on the decade. Mine was the 50s. Skates and skate keys, riding my bike, or walking, all over our 5,000 population town. Five cent coca-colas and moon pies. Radio news at noon with Paul Harvey. Stomping on cans to make ourselves one inch taller; stilts to make ourselves a foot taller. Riding the horses my grandfather had for plowing the fields. Climbing all over the cotton bales processed next door. Having the freedom to play without constant supervision. No threats of strangers. Dressing up on Sundays for church. Visiting widows with groceries with grandma. Saturday night fights on tv, watching with grandpa. Early morning rising to have coffee with grandpa before he went to the field. Lightning bugs captured in mason jars. Fried chicken lunches on Sunday at grandma's. Funerals of old relatives. Once-a-year cleaning of cemeteries of loved ones. Sitting in grandma's lap in her '57 Chevy learning to drive.
