Be aware -- BoA to start charing $5 monthly fees just for having a debit card

    http://abcnews.go.com/Business/wireS...cards-14633305

If anyone else has so many bank accounts they hardly check any non-statement post, this may interest you. Make sure you don't have a debit card at BoA if you don't need one, when/if it begins. Think of this solely as a heads-up.

Bank of America will start charging debit-card users $5 a month to pay for purchases. The move comes as the cards increasingly replace cash and as banks look for ways to offset the loss of revenue from a new rule that will limit how much they can collect from merchants.

Paying to use a debit card was unheard of before this year and is still a novel concept for many consumers. But several banks have recently introduced or started testing debit card fees. That's in addition to the spate of other unwelcome changes checking account customers have seen in the past year. Bank of America will begin charging the fee early next year.

Bank of America's announcement carries added weight because it is the largest U.S. bank by deposits.

The fee will apply to basic accounts, which are marketed toward those with modest balances, and will be in addition to any existing monthly service fees. For example, one such account charges a $12 monthly fee unless customers meet certain conditions, such as maintaining a minimum average balance of $1,500.

Customers will only be charged the fee if they use their debit cards for purchases in any given month, said Anne Pace, a Bank of America spokeswoman. Those who only use their cards at ATMs won't have to pay.

The debit card fee is just the latest twist in the rapidly evolving market for checking accounts.

A study by Bankrate.com this week found that just 45 percent of checking accounts are now free with no strings attached, down from 65 percent last year and 76 percent in 2009. Customers can still get free checking in most cases, but only if they meet certain conditions, such as setting up direct deposit.

The study also found that the total average cost for using an ATM rose to $3.81, from $3.74, the year before. The average overdraft fee inched up to $30.83, from $30.47

The changes come ahead of a regulation that goes into effect next month.

Starting Oct. 1, the regulation will cap the fees that banks can collect from merchants whenever customers swipe their debit cards. Those fees generated $19 billion in revenue for banks in 2009, according to the Nilson Report, which tracks the payments industry.

There is no similar cap on the merchant fees that banks can collect when customers use their credit cards, however. That means many banks are increasingly encouraging customers to reach for their credit cards, in hopes of reversing a trend toward debit card usage in the past several years.

An increasing reliance on credit cards would be particularly beneficial for big institutions like Bank of America, which have large credit card portfolios, notes Bart Narter, a banking analyst with Celent, a consulting firm.

"It's become a more profitable business, at least in relation to debit cards," Narter said.

This summer, an Associated Press-GfK poll found that two-thirds of consumers use debit cards more frequently than credit cards. But when asked how they would react if they were charged a $3 monthly debit card fee, 61 percent said they'd find another way to pay.

With a $5 fee, 66 percent said they would change their payment method.

Several banks are nevertheless moving ahead with debit card fees.

SunTrust, a regional bank based in Atlanta, began charging a $5 debit card fee on its basic checking accounts this summer. Regions Financial, which is based in Birmingham, Ala., plans to start charging a $4 fee next month.

Chase and Wells Fargo are also testing $3 monthly debit card fees in select markets. Neither bank has said when it will make a final decision on whether to roll out the fee more broadly.

The growing prevalence of the debit card fee is alarming for Josh Wood, a 32-year-old financial adviser in Amarillo, Texas.

Wood relies entirely on debit cards to avoid interest charges on a credit card. If his bank, Wells Fargo, began charging a debit card fee, he said he would take his business to a credit union.

If a debit fee became so prevalent that it was unavoidable, Wood said he's not sure how he'd react.

"I might use all cash. Or go back to writing checks," he said.

Bank of America's debit card fee will be rolled out in stages starting with select states in early 2012. The company would not say which states would be affected first.

Just saw this posted on FB. As long as they don't give me a hard time picking up coins and not having an account there then I'll be happy. Hit up a BoA for my first dime box, friend used to work there so I figured may as well go there. No issues at all. They were glad to help me out.

So despite the depreciation of the dollar, cash is still king. I never stopped using it. Never used a debit card. My last ATM card was 18 years ago. It was called a MAC card.

I don't bank with B of A, but if I did, I'd leave them in a New York minute.

We have gone to almost a 100% cash basis, after years of debit card usage...and our life is easier and more simple than it has ever been.

I once dumped at BoA about a week and a half ago, they asked if I was a member, I told them my VISA is backed by BoA and showed them lol. She didn't know what to do so they took my $300 in MWRs, rewrapped. They took my name and number just in case too.

    never used BOA, never will.

never used a debit card. cash or credit card. I get my credit card rewards and pay the balance every time with no fees. I win...lol...which is usually rare!

I would never pay a monthly fee to use a debit card. What a crock. But millions will....so BOA probably will win a ton of money on their changes.

    I hate BOA

I use M&T. My ATM card is also a credit card. When I use it they say debit or credit. I always say credit and there is no added charge. There is no charge for the debit "ATM" card. There is no charge for my bank account also. I do not pay for overdraft protection because I never overdraft.
To me it is good banking at NO cost. Frank

Re: Be aware -- BoA to start charing $5 monthly fees just for having a debit card

These fees were a reaction to a " reform" passed by Dick Drubin amending the Dodd-Frank Act.

    http://www.nypost.com/p/news/opinion...-rss&FEEDNAME=

BoA is not the only bank being affected and not the only bank that will be imposing fees to get back their lost profits. The consumer is always the scape goat in these financial battles.

Hope the link works so you can read it for yourself.

Re: Be aware -- BoA to start charing $5 monthly fees just for having a debit card

    Here's another one for you.

Our bank started charging everytime we use somebody else's atm machine! Then, they pulled theirs out of the lobby.

So, now if we take money out of First Interstate Bank, by an ATM machine, we pay whatever the ATM fee is PLUS, $3.00 from our own bank charge.

Guess who is not using their debit card at ATM's?

Re: Be aware -- BoA to start charing $5 monthly fees just for having a debit card

Yep - passed by the liberals. Really?

You don't think it has anything to do with the banks trying to make money on us, when the law stopped them from stealing it in other ways?

A constant change in fees for mortgages, make believe appraisals, the bundled selling and buying of loans, back and forth, changing interest rates, sur-charges, lessening of services, PLUS our tax dollars - BEFORE the Obama election when we bailed out thousands of them, and, the poor babies now have to find other ways to steal our money from us.

The banks are not content with a regular income, they want to be in the 1% bracket of income earners. Most of them are crooked as he**.

Surprise - you and I are part of the 99%. It doesn't have anything to do with liberals or conservatives, it has to do with the "haves" and "have nots", and WE are the "have nots". Plutacracy - plain and simple.

no, $5 is not alot for using it...but it is the principle of the thing. First they started charging for people using their ATM's, then they charges us to use other banks ATM, even if they are "free" like at WAWA. Many of us have gotten used to going practically cashless. I too am fed up with BofA and will probably close my accounts. Just a problem with several auto. deposits to be moved. I didnt like them before this new fee though...I seem to have lots of problems with them.

dncr1, Just open an account at another bank and set up your direct deposits with them. After you see the deposits showing in your new account close the old account. I use M&T my ATM card is also a visa card so when they ask ,credit or debit, I say credit and avoid any extra charges. In reality, the visa is treated like a debit to my account. My checking is also no charge. Frank
