    Metal detector concern

    Hello,

I understand the importance of positive thinking in this sometimes chaotic world.

However, I have a concern about the prolonged use of my metal detector.

You hear a lot of info nowadays about cancer emitting devices like cell phones, microwaves, etc.

I have held a detector in my hands for 25 years now. My machine has crystal electronics which can be disrupted by satellite dishes or power lines at least a block away.

This tell me that it's sending out waves that encompass a large area. How many times I've run my hand with a clump of soil over the search coil.

What I'm getting at is the exposure my body has had to what my detector emits. I don't understand entirely what is going through my body.

Electronic radio waves? Any difference than what a cell phone sends out? Should I be concerned?

You'd be hard pressed to find another person out there that has spent as much time detecting than I have. Hardcore.

I'm saying that I've had a ton of exposure over a long period of time.

    Any thoughts?

Sorry for being a downer but this concern has been on my mind for a few years now and I have never discussed it or seen anything written about it.

    Appreciate any feedback.

    Cheers.

    Jeff,

I'm glad that I made you laugh but I'm actually serious.

If you think my concern is ridiculous then please share why.

Am I wrong to question this?

Detectors emit relatively low-frequency radio waves. Probably not much of a problem. The extraordinarily high frequencies we use nowadays may be a different matter...I don't know. There is a helluva ruckus going on about the SmartMeters the power companies are installing which will saturate neighborhoods with high frequency emissions 24/7.

    Re: Metal detector concern

Giving The RF power and the Frequency your detector is operating with is of little threat.

A PI detector a bit more.

    But check this out!

I worked for a Microwave Communications outfit.

Four of the people I worked with are DEAD.

Three from Leukemia and One from Bone Cancer.

The most power we used was 3-5 watts.

The Governments going to have a hard time telling me EMF of any power levels is harmless.

Here's a good one for ya.

I bought 4 live fish at Wall Mart.

Took them straight home, floated the bag in the tank to accumate them.

    In 30 minutes they died.

Back to the Store, Got 4 more fishes!

Got them Home did the same thing and in 30 minutes DEAD again.

Again , Back to Wall Mart I go.

This time I told them there fish were sick and wanted my money back.

The girl said, did you walk them behind the Scanner?

    I said, Eaaaa?

She explained that they could not go through the Scanner because it does something to them.

Sure enough, I walked the new fish BEHIND the Scanner and all was well.

Ok, Guppies have a brain about the size of the Pin Head at most but that Scanner had enough power to kill them.

What ta Ell is it doing to me?

Don't believe me? LOL Try it with your own fish.

I just wonder who has the time to bar code fish

Muddyhandz, I guess anything can kill you, but I would suggest that you never wave that magic wand over your family jewels for an extended period of time

You can't get away from it, except maybe with a couple boxes worth of tinfoil. You are being bombarded every day with natural and man-made radiation.

homefires - is this the barcode scanner at the checkout, or the loss prevention device at the exit?

Beep, if it's the lost prevention device at the end, then I'm wondering who the heck is tagging those fish

Walking through the detector at the door doesn't require that the fish be tagged, right? Probably in a bag, which could have something on it, but unlikely.

Yes the Stanchion type Loss detectors.

    Re: Metal detector concern

I've been hunting pretty much just as long as you have. At this stage I'm looking at repetitive motion injuries being my main concern. Arm and shoulder will sometimes ache after a hard days hunt. One time I threw my back out while water hunting, those long handle water scoops can create havoc on your back.
I don't think those eddy currents extending from the coil are of any concern, hopefully.

    Re: Metal detector concern

I have a hunch that detecting and the resulting emitted radio waves from the detector can cause havoc. I've only been detecting for only 21 yrs now and now I've noticed wrinkles on my hands, crows feet around my eyes, needing a magnifying glass to read dates on found coins, and am a little slower to get up off my knees. It must be detectoritous, which is caused by the multi-frequency emitting detectors that I use. My days are numbered!

    Re: Metal detector concern

I remember when I started tectin. I didn't want to go fishing or hang out with my friends or anything. In fact, most of my friends and family have real metal detecting concerns about me. But they always want to borrow my machines and go tectin. Too late, I just croaked.

    Re: Metal detector concern

    Thanks for all the replies!
One of the strangest things happened 5 years ago. I met a Russian "healer" who scanned my body with her hands (energy work) and said "oh oh" when she passed over my right arm.
She barely spoke English but was able to tell me that she was concerned about my right arm and asked what I did for a job.
I told her that the only thing major I do with that arm was metal detect for many years. She had no idea what that meant and after trying to explain with finally showing her motions, she said "ah, treasure."
She warned that I must stop doing this or my arm will be "dead" in the near future. I didn't pay much attention to it.
As spiritual as I am, I don't put much stock in the New Age movement (I prefer old age wisdom lol.) but still wondered how the hell she knew about my arm.
Now, my logical mind will say that without a doubt, swinging and gripping a 5 pound detector for 10 hours a day, for at least 200 days a year is going to give me repetitive strain and possibly carpal tunnel.
Was she sensing this or is there actually radiation poisoning?
Based on a few replies here I would agree that the amount of cancer emitting waves would probably be low.
    You never know!
It matters not as I will keep detecting even if it kills me!

the human body is just a biomechical machine * it converts food and drink onto electrical impluses and energy to power our brain & nervious system , which controls the bodys functions -- anything that can disrupt the flow of electrical impluses within the body can effect the body -- even low dose energy if the expose time is long enough can have a effect -- (just the same way a tiny but steady dose of poison can kill you thru its "cumulative" effect over time) --it just builds up damage over time -- but no matter what you do , we are all "born for the grave" one day --so just enjoy life while ya got it.

if you are too worried please send your detector to me and I'll give it to my nephew .
