Reality check for asteroid miners
Space entrepreneurs laid out a lot of the details for their billionaire-backed plan to extract resources from near-Earth asteroids today, but other details — such as how much they've received in investments, or exactly how they'll get their hands on precious water and precious metals — are still being held close to the vest.
If planetary resources is as successful as its founders hope, it could be bringing a fortune in platinum and gold back to Earth within the next decade or two, and supplying outer-space filling stations with water, fuel and air for interplanetary travelers. The company could tap into trillions of dollars' worth of space resources. But the venture could also go bust, just as some of the first European trading companies did when they came to the Americas centuries ago

These are serious people with serious backers. It makes me wonder what the the real motive is? I understand that having resources in space, water, fuel, etc. could be huge, but mining gold and platinum doesn't make sense unless they know something we don't, gold at $6,000oz??
Regardless, it will be very exciting to see what will happen.

I support the concept . The guys that bring in the first mega ton ore deposits are going to recover investments like bandits .
Then it's gonna go the way of the Marcellus deep hole gas fields . The more recovery = lower prices until either endeavor works it's way out of a job by being too efficient .

of course you can't have a Trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion Dollars worth of Metals to sell,
if there is only a Trillion, trillion Dollars on earth.
the Metals then go for peanuts.
gold 50 dollars an oz making it not worth bringing back.
The other downfall eventually out of jealousy, someone will get the bright
idea to claim the asteroid belt controls our weather & Orbit, & Claim
more Global chaos, & the followers of the world
will believe it, & Protest asteroid mining.

Yep your right.
If not from the fuels needed to get their first,
the pollution created here, to send them there,
or the possible space bugs they may bring back LOL

She is not old enough to have seen that movie! But I don't remember seeing chickens in it either.

Very interesting topic. It brings up so many "what-if's". I'm sure many investors are serious but I'm sure there will be many scams and proposals of laws nobody ever thought would be needed. The "space miners" are very forward-thinking and I wish them luck. There will be many follies.
