Aside from playing outside on most days, there were always a few days you stayed inside and played board games all day. Unlike sitting in front of a video game, some of these took a bit of thought, as well as luck.
Aside from chess, checkers, Milton Bradley ruled back in the early 60's. 3 of my favorites were Dogfight, Broadside, and Hit the Beach. Parker Brothers offered Risk, a game that could go on for hours.
The longest playing board game I have ever played is Axis and Allies, about 3-5 hours.
