What is known, without question, is that it was burned on the orders of the Bishop of Rhodes, with his rationalisation "if it isn't written in the Bible, then it is without relevance or meaning".

**Note that this was actually the "daughter library" located at the Serapeum - the original library accidentally burned in 48BC when Julius Caesar ordered his ships burned in the harbour.
