A few comments on the OP and obsevations and opions that are mine.

Many Veterans are homeless. What a national disgrace...

Many Vets have no real "outreach" or means to travel to such help.

"Lock 'em up" is a draconian knee-jerk reaction of people whom I suspect have more serious issues of their own...I agree with empathy and "putting yourself in their shoes" to gain a better intimate perspective of their situation.

Crispin is not a name that I'm currently familiar with, nor the theory proposed. However, this is "right up my alley" of current educational endeavors and I will soon familiarize myself with all of the principles involved. Is this body of work published and where?

My initial opinion is that-

1) There are many types of mental impairment.

2) Very few lead to negative socio-behavior.

3) The people who "snap" and go on these rampages almost certainly all have different disorders.
Including physiological impairments. Certain markers should be flagged and examined, though....

4) "Prediction" of such tragedies is at best a coin flip, due to:
a) a misunderstanding of mental illness among the general public
b) a lack of funds to study and further understand that Freud or Jung may have nailed it 100 or so years ago, but dynamics of social change MUST always be taken into consideration.

5) Placing the blame of the actions of a person, bent on destruction,
upon an inantimate object, is purely reductio ad absurdum.

My Best,

Scott

Scott,

Truly...you raise many excellent points. You know as well as I that each point you raised could be a dissertation thesis of a willing undergrad. It would take me days to compose an adequate response. Perhaps one day we can meet over a guinness to discuss this and laugh at people drinking Labaats! Going after you again Bill.

Crispin, I really appreciate your outline of bi-polar. What percentage of the population is bi-polar or is that number unknown? I understand the line graph you describe however for someone to be bi-polar do they have to go all the way to the left and right or is there some variation to it? Do some people grow out of it or does it usually get worse with time?

You were right earlier in the thread I did mean Bi-polar but using my phone it auto corrects and sometimes it "corrects" to the wrong word and I don't catch it before I post. Again thank you for the information.

EOD: In my eyes, you will always be trusted with any type of firearm until proven otherwise. Your service record stands for itself. The mental health field, particulary the VA (I know, I worked for them and ran PTSD groups) does not see this diagnosis negatively. It is viewed as an opportunity to identify veterans at risk who need help. The VA is actively and constantly revamping mandates for what they want ER doctors and psych doctors to screen for. When certain questions are answered affirmatively it causes a cascade of orders to be given that will provide help. For me, it was onerous and burdensome because I hate clicking buttons on a screen and would rather spend the time with patients. However, I believe it is helping.

Hey Crispin. Most of what I know about psychology comes from being a sounding board for an x wife getting her degree so it's probably dated. I.m not familiar with Axis disorders or clusters. Is this new theory general or specific to a trend in psychology?
There used to be neurotics and psychotics. I liked one explanation of how one could tell the difference.
To a psychotic, 2 plus 2 could equal anything, 6 10 12 because they invent their own truth. A neurotic knew 2 plus 2 equaled four but couldn't stand it.
At least by that definition most of of the crazy events appear to be done by neurotics and probably wouldn't be considered dangerous as so many people fit the mold. Their just POed. It's ez to spot a actual crazy person but not the real dangerous ones. Ted Bundy is an example. Most who knew him thought he was great.
Most dangerous people walk among us and will never see a psych ward.

Hvacker: Your diagnosis are definitions are accurate for the late 70's and 80's. The definitons have changed but obviously the people being diagnosed have not. That is one of the frustrating things about psychiatry and why I do not place a lot of empthasis on diagnosis. A simple definiton of psychosis is: No longer being in touch with reality. This can range from audiotory/visual hallucinations, delusions, illusions, ideas of reference, or paranoia. I'll qoute the Supreme Court's ruling on pornography "I'll know it when I see it." Neurosis is an old Freudian term and not one we use currently. It is not a diagnosis in the DSM.

There is another book about sociopaths...titled something like, "The dangers that walk among us." You are right, they will never see a psych ward. The only treatment for a violent sociopath is a bullet. Seriously, I mean that. I am one of the most compassionate people you will meet. I always believe in second chances and helping people. If you meet a violent sociopath...put a bullet in his head, because if not, he will put one in yours.

Since I came from the bomb squad firearms should be the least of anyone's concern. Joking aside I'm just saying I don't wanna see veterans get the shaft over a illness they incurred while serving their country. It should be case by case.

I made some comments on another thread about locking up the mentally ill like we used to in the past, I didn't mean everyone with a mental illness, I meant the violent and potentially violent ones that parents and family are afraid of.

If we could identify them...yes, I would agree. 99.999% of the mentally ill are truly sick and need help. Theoretically, lets say that I could sit down with somebody and make a diagnosis 100% of the time that they were going to to be a violent sociopath. I'm good, not that good, but lets just say I could. If I could answer that question correctly 100% of the time, would you want me to have that power? I would refuse it. I would not want that power. Everybody has free will. Locking up the mentally ill never did and will never make any sense. Thank you for participating in the conversation. I respect you and your opinion.

There are thousands walking around with bi-polar disorder that do not know it.And the ones that do know it can cover it up so well. One in twenty in this country have some kind of mental issue.Yes,i am bi-polar.I function just fine most of the time.I worked for the department of defense.A adjunct teacher at my local technical college.I have done some good things in my life while battling this disease. There are some brilliant people that have all kinds of mental disorders.I have been in psych wards.I am not ashamed of anything.Things can happen to anyone at anytime.People with mental issues are not the only ones committing murders.Just as guns are not the only weapons that kill. :-X

Bill, thank you for the example. That is pretty much how I understood Bi-polar. I am really wondering how it is diagnosed.....does it fit a precise set of parameters or is it more of a long term observation? What are the treatments and how effective are the treatments? I have wondered about this for years.
Most all mental disorders such as bi-polar can not be detected with a physical test.Meaning such as a blood test or x-ray.Psychiatrist have test sheets for different psychological problems.Treatments are mood stabilizer drugs. They are effective.Bi-polar can not be cured but only treated. Most bi-polar patients try to stay away from the meds so they can fly high on a mania trip. The mania trip causes increased energy and a very increased liking for sexual activity.A bi-polar person can cycle from hi to low at different rates. You can get so depressed on a low swing that it is very common to commit suicide.
