Glad that's over quickly, any Critters out tonight? I had one grandsons final baseball game today, followed by a pizza party and pool party at the house. Take a cruise without me, I'll show her we can have fun too. By the way she sent me text right when the ship made open water, her patient was already passed out drunk, and the seas were so heavy it was rocking the ship causing the closet doors to fly open.......I honestly looked I'm my heart for sympathy and just couldn't find any as I went chasing the 18 month old just after he flipped the dogs water bowl over on his head!

ThanksBill. I'm just jealous...... This is her 4th cruise without me. She took one cruise when I was in Afghanistan! She has taken 3 more with her patient counting this one but this time she left me with 5 grand kids fro 18 months to 11 years old. Two are still in school. We handle this well when she's with me, but right now I'd rather be facing 100 Taliban ( again) at least I knew my options then . Hahahaha. Anyway truth is I'm making the best of it. I see now why kids are for young people!

Three old men are sitting on the porch of a VA retirement home. The first says, "Fellas, I got real problems. I'm seventy years old. Every morning at seven o'clock I get up and I try to urinate. All day long I try to urinate. They give me all kinds of medicine but nothing helps." The second old man says, "You think you have problems. I'm eighty years old. Every morning at 8:00 I get up and try to move my bowels. I try all day long. They give me all kinds of stuff but nothing helps." Finally the third old man speaks up, "Fellas: I'm ninety years old. Every morning at 7:00 sharp I urinate. Every morning at 8:00 I move my bowels. Every morning at 9:00 sharp I wake up."

Sounds like a true story.

I plan on going out the same way I came in. Naked, no teeth, and wearing a diaper. Either that or peacefully in my sleep like my grandpa did, unlike the 3 other screaming people in the car.

Welcome tonight to "Scott's Locks."

Tonight we will explore Kwikset's "Smart Key" system.

Now,
Any locksmith will tell you, "DON'T disassemble a 'smart key' system lock!"

But, you folks know me.....
Yeah, tell me NOT to do something.....

I'll provide some background music for you as we disassemble one.

My locksmith friend and I were called to a job and we were requested to replace the double-sided deadbolt locks on the front door.

The reason was that all other locks were standard Schlage.
The customer didn't want so many different brand keys.

They had also lost the key to the Kwikset.

Afterwards, I had a few minutes and decided to see if I could salvage the lock set.

If you don't have a key, you are relegated to using an expensive "reset tool,"
KWIKSET Cylinder Reset Cradle,Commercial - Lockset Cylinders - 2WJE2|83260 SMT RESET CRADLE GR - Grainger Industrial Supply
(My Friend has this tool, but, Tell me not to? We've had this discussion, haven't we?)

They are touted as "Un-pick-able."

Or,
Disassembly required to reset.
Or so I learned through "self-education"

Here's some info on Kwikset's "Smart Key."

Kwikset SmartKey Locks - Build.com

OK.

Shall we begin?

IMG_1404.JPG
The cylinder we will be resetting.

IMG_1405.JPG
The back side.

IMG_1407.JPG
Breaking it down some more.
The works drop out from the mounting rings and cylinder.

IMG_1408.JPG
Disassembly of the works....

IMG_1409.JPG
Here, we remove the retaining clip of the tail-piece.

IMG_1410.JPG
Once the clip is removed, several parts are removed.
Hope y'all keep up with parts.....
And ball bearings.
AND springs.....
Shall we continue?

IMG_1411.JPG
Now, as you can see, there are "pins" sticking up in the "cage" of the core housing.
These have to be pushed down until they are aligned to remove the core.

IMG_1412.JPG
Once the core is removed,
You will be on your hands and knees looking for the ball bearing and spring.

IMG_1413.JPG
The whole gist of Kwikset's "Smart Key" is the employment of a type of "side Bar,"
One of the only applications of a side bar that I'm aware of in Residential locks.
Commonly found on Automotive ignitions....
Schlage has a similar system called, "Secure Key."
(I'm looking into that next.......)

IMG_1414.JPG
Once you have the core removed from the "housing,"
and have found the ball bearing and tiny spring,
Separate the "slider" from the core.
Yes, more smaller parts.....

IMG_1415.JPG

Place all of the "grips" properly in place and line them up so that the "groove" across the top is even.

IMG_1416.JPG

Then, carefully mate the "slider" to the core body.
Make sure that you have the "slider" all the way to the rear....
IMG_1417.JPG

Then insert a "pre-cut key.

IMG_1418.JPG

Then place the "side-bar" in place,
hold it down,
and,

While holding the side bar in place,
slide the slider to the front and insert the tiny spring you spent time on your hands and knees finding.

IMG_1420.JPG

Yeah,
I'm gonna talk about that ball bearing here.....
Put it on the other spring,
Hold EVERYTHING in place,
and easily slip it all back into the collar housing.

IMG_1421.JPG

When assembled,
Remove key and re-assemble the remaining components in reverse order of disassembly.

IMG_1422.JPG

Now,
Wasn't that simple?

Next,
On "Scott's Locks,"
We may explore automotive ignitions with a "side-bar."

From a Memorial Day Benefit....
Memorial Day in one week.

Hope all will take a minute to think of those who have served and gave all....

Thank those who have served and are still here to receive appreciation.

I will spend next Monday,
in the local Cemetery,
In the Veterans Section,
Thanking my Brothers and Sisters.....

You
HAVE NO IDEA
what our Country's Heroes have endured....
Unless you served.

Always,

My Friends,

My

Best Wishes to All!

Scott

How did I know that my Dear Friend RC would be the first to reply?

I always thank others for their service.

I can see the 1000 yard look....

I find the mechanical challenge of locks to be intriguing and have always had an affinity towards mechanical perceptions.

I've designed and hand-made tools to assist me from tuning pianos to Locksmithing to, well,
Just about everything that I needed a tool that was yet to be invented or one that I couldn't afford....

RC,
My Friend,

Thank you for reminding me how good it is to have a Friend!

To You,
My Very Best Wishes,

Scott

The Forgotten War I went to my grandsons final baseball game today, the eight year old. Spent my time thanking and talking to a Korean Vet. I too served in Korea, but not during his day. Do you know the Korean War is not over, it's just a cease fire agreement! We both knew that. One of the coldest winters I have ever spent was 2 winters in Korea. At least I didn't face the Chinese like my new friend........ You can learn a lot at your grandsons baseball games.

"Yes, M 'Lord....

It appears that Master Scott was not meant of this time.
Perhaps a Century past.
Or a Century future....."

My Best,

Scott

OK.

Here's the reason of this post....

I've always wished my tombstone to read,

"Scott...

Born 100 years too Late.
Died 100 years too Soon."

Just posted as clarification, that's all.

My Best,

Scott

And it goes on....

Remember what I said about tomorrow.....

Best,

Scott

Oh!

I'm gonna have my long hair flowing for my DL photo, knowing that I'll cut it short when I Graduate next year.
I'm gettin' a 10 year license!!!!

2GF,
My Friend,

Have you ever just sat and watched children play?

Or adults "playing games?"

I have.....

I've been paid for my abilities in such situations......
Observations and analysis.....
Dang! I've almost said too much.
Again.....

Anyway,
Soon, one child emerges as the leader.

Watch that child.
Nurture that child, instill values, and pray that he respects America as we do.
