While thinking about this another way to merge smithing and treasure hunting. A guy on another show makes classic swords. The difference is he lives in PA and gets his iron from the mountains. Maybe magnetite. Adds carbon from the forge work so his steel is also hand made.
I live in a sand box but if I run a magnet through the sand it will be covered with iron. Curious.

Wow! Almost a shame to fire it up.
Thanks! It took me a little time to get it done in between all my other projects. Now I just need to find an anvil somewhere.

Look at that... Fancy:) did u have a before pic that i missed? That will be a fun hobby ! Just make sure your well covered! As im sure you know.
I stuck an iron piece in the fire to burn the rust off.... Had googles on, but they were too big , and when I whacked it with a hammer a fire hot chunk flew behind my googles and burnt my eyelid... Lol
Then again in the queen of disaster . Moral of the story , protect those eyes! :)
It looks beautiful by the way, shame it's gotta get unpretty to be of use.

Thanks for the offer, but I am sure shipping would be super expensive! Your right about railroad policy as I have had first hand experiance with their attitudes. But I suppose if they were loose about people on the tracks there would be problems.

This is a before picture. I know ehat you mean about protecting your eyes as I have had steel removed twice...both times I had safety glasses on and the shavings came in from the sides...:banghead:
