A large brood of 17-year periodical cicadas (genus Magicicada) is expected to emerge this spring across portions of eastern North America. These insects spend up to 13 or 17 years of their life cycle living underground. Then, they emerge in large numbers to breed. While things may get noisy in 2013—their mating songs are among the loudest of all sounds produced by insects—don’t worry, they won’t bite or sting. The emergence of periodical cicadas is actually a fascinating natural phenomenon to observe.

I have experienced them while living in Missouri. The noise the make is enough to drive you nuts if you listen to it, you have to learn to tune them out...

Any day now, East about to be overrun by billions of cicadas

[h=3]The East Coast Brood[/h] b_02.jpg

WASHINGTON (AP) — billions of cicadas with bulging red eyes will crawl out of the earth after 17 years underground and overrun the East Coast. The insects will arrive in such numbers that people from North Carolina to Connecticut will be outnumbered roughly 600-to-1. Maybe more.

have you ever dug them up while detecting ?

I think I have on occasion.
But they always appeared Dead & Dried up.
I never played with them to see if they would wake up,
so not 100% sure that's what they were.
they were the right shape but all brown.

I hate those things with an unbridled passion! It all started out in seventh grade when some boy chased me with one and threw it down the back of my shirt. Dumb boys.:laughing7:

Did I say I was gonna jump off a roof top? Or pull their legs off.... Lol. I carefully put them back and softly pat the dirt back around them. Still sucks when trees don't have leaves in the summer

It is the constant buzzing that gets to you, 10 times worse that a mosquito on steroids with a 1000 watt amplifier tied to his butt....
