Here's an Arkansas "delicacy" for you... an alligator gar 8' 2" long and weighing 240 lbs., caught in the White River. (One 8' 5" long and weighing 356 lbs. was reportedly caught at Horseshoe Lake, Arkansas in 1931.) Water hunting, anyone?
You need a special permit to hunt those in Florida now.You don't see them too much down here in Southern Florida.I remember catching a few years ago up near Gainesville. Here's another one with a girth of 44.75 inches weighing in at 244.5 lbs,and measuring a little over 8'2". :)

Funny thing about steel head salmon... becoming "rainbow trout" when they come back to fresh water. Are they the only ones to do this? I'm naive on the subject. -Benny

You don't EAT gar, do ya?

Er... no. Knew a fellow who did try it, though. He said it was "like chewing cotton."

There's also an old expression, "Mean as gar soup."

ALL fish are fun to catch. I have to give the fight to bluegil though. There are 10-lb bluegil but science doesn't know it yet. That's because no one has ever been able to reel one in. It's always that big one that got away. ;)

Steelhead are a sea run trout, salmon are a whole 'nother species. Steelies do the same thing the salmon do, go out to the ocean, get big, and come back upstream to spawn. This years run will be a 5 year fish, biggies! I tried to find a pic I had from years ago, caught a 20 plus pound steelhead here in Oregon. Thats almost unheard of. Had the biggest grin of my life on my face in that pic, LOL! ;D

Exactly. I used to troll for them in Lake Ontario. They are fighters, and often look more like they are covered in silver than anything... they really are just giant trout!

Mine to catch is a Mud fish. some folks call them a bow fin or a black fish. They ain't much good to eat ;) but they sure can fight and they have teeth which makes them even more fun to catch :). To eat now I like perch both white and black (crappie) and bream, shellcracker being the best. ;D

Hey, RD—

Down in Arkansas we always called 'em grindle... and you're right, they can put up a heck of a fight!
