I just can't fix ignorance-

I'm not saying that terminal velocity is up to 300' per second and that firing into the air is deadly....

THE WHOLE FREAKING WORLD IS SAYING IT

But, they are all apparently wrong, and it's okay to be shooting into the air. (and shooting into the air doesn't always mean straight up)

Egads-

Somebody close the crazy gate please.

In my younger days, we use to build fighting kites. You used two control liner to steer it. You had a hooked blade on the base of the kite to cut your opponents line. It was great fun. Now you could add a tail line as mentioned above, to foul the prop on the drone and just 'reel' it in. Slip it in a Mylar bag to kill any locating device.
Frank...- AA wright bros flier.jpg That's the Wright way to do it.

PS: all things fall at the same rate, 24' per sec /per sec. That's terminal volicity!

I wish someone would close the crazy alarmist gate! Some preach total control. Some preach education.

Anyone notice I made it back! No terminally falling bullets. Guess it is like getting struck by lightning, or winning a big lottery. Will let you know when it happens!

Are you actually saying that if it is going faster than that it isn' t falling, but still reacting to force? You just can't teach that to some people.

Dave,

If thinking (and supplying lot's of supporting documents) that shooting into the air is dangerous and deadly makes me a crazy alarmist, then so be it.

I think shooting into the air is dangerous.

I'm glad you are not my neighbor.

Way to leave common sense at the door gib! You really don't read posts do you? It shows that We really do need firearm safety and handling taught to our youth. Otherwise they could fall prey to a lot of misinformation, by those with agendas.

Hey G.I.B.... I totally get what your "getting at" but I feel it's a far reach especially with your supporting data. Is it a concern... well I guess it could be if someone wanted to shoot into the air toward a metro area on purpose over and over and over without a target in mind. But for myself to just shoot into the air and "worry" about where it lands or for someone else to do it is not something I worry about. Not for a minute do I believe if I shot a .22 mag into the air and missed what I was shooting at would I worry about hitting a person 1.5 miles away. And if I had the 30/30 or 300 mag out the same goes for these 2 rifles. If I had a loved one sitting on my deck and a bullet came from a mile away or more and killed or harmed them I would NOT consider this murder, attempted murder, assault or an attempted assault and other charges. It's what it is ... an accident only and a very unfortunate one but and accident all the same. No one does this on purpose at THOSE ranges. So if shooting into the air is considered dangerous to you would taking your wife or child for a walk in my woods be dangerous with all the rattlers and copperheads around. My Grandchildren run all over these woods and ridges. The odds of them getting bite is very low using common sense... but the odds of someone being hit by all the MILLIONS of bullets sent skyward are very, very remote. It has got to be one of the lowest concerns of expected injury among many. But... CAN SHOOTING INTO THE AIR POSSIBILY BE DANGEROUS TO ANOTHER INDIVIDULE... YES IT COULD.

But back to the original question: "Can you destroy a drone"... hell yes, it's EASY. And I'd shoot a hovering or circling one in a heartbeat in the country or city with ZERO concern about the bullet or what law enforcement thought.

A good air rifle will be almost impossible to trace the sound of ... my Nitro Crossman penetrates a 1/2 inch piece of plywood so it should be sufficient with the scope.

Drones over my property ARE my property ...

Absolutely... but your on the low end of power here after 20 yds. - 30 yds. (but will work). If your in town or a metro area a homemade silencer works great. Just use common sense.

You don't own the airspace over your property. What are you going to do if the police decide to circle your house in a helicopter a few times? So you do what I do to all varmints........ If you find a drone flying around, I'd do what 2GF does to all unwanted predators.......I'd take it down with a burst or two from one of my high powered Airsoft guns(yes I've killed snakes with them) or I'd destroy one with one of my good old fashioned .68 caliber, 26 balls per second paintball guns. I value my privacy, what little we have left.......

Of course I'm speaking of the small ones that you can fly with an IPad, and GIB is just trying to get folks to think...............WOW where did this thread go? Where I live the cops would get me for discharging a weapon within city limits............. I don't live in the city.

In my neck of the woods, very close to populated areas yet in the country, on any day you may hear a few hundred rounds going off. Today, yesterday and the day before maybe a few thousand. I don't know if I mentioned it but there is an army base within 45 miles too, and when they play, sometimes late into the night, you can hear some big ground shaking booms. Guess what? I am not scared. Which brings me to the main point..... How would you enforce a law so stupid? You would have to steal the rights of huge swaths of the community, and that doesn't fly.

Now, the op asked if you could take down a drone? The answer is ABSOLUTELY. unless they make themselves known as law enforcement. And at that point someone is going to get to be the Guinea pig in front of a judge, testing whether we have any rights left at all!

Now to add to that... The day a drone hovers or circles my home and announces "This is law enforcement" will be one that is taken DOWN FAST! Any drone that announces their presence has a death wish instantly. Law enforcement be damned! I'll decide who invades my privacy this close... Period... as stated before. Just go back to the satellites. Some of these folks with ideas of how to bring them down are very interesting and really have my curiosity.

With the jammer - the FAA may not like drones but the FCC definately frowns on jamming signals. Most drones and R/C aircraft now use the same 2.4MHz signal that cell phones use. With modern R/C you actuall "call" your specific model and the signal is bound to that one receiver. The sophisticated ones "skip" to multiple frequencies and are only accepting signals with the transmitter's specific code.

Besiders - something flying over your home is an invasion of privacy. Something out-of-control over you home is a hazard. You jamb it - you're responsible if it hurts someone or something.

Dave,

It's another perspective. Not a sure thing that you will get whacked with a bullet when on a lake. Your summary did not change the facts for all the people that did get hit.

Did you click the link and read anything about all the folks that did get hit with stray bullets?

TH- Here's an article you might enjoy about jammers. Click this His proposed fine was only $48,000 for using the jammer.

For people thinking about using jammers- be careful. it's a crime to block some signals.
They have to catch you first....
