According to a report from the US Inspector General for Afghanistan reconstruction, the US spent $3 million on 8 patrol boats for the Afghan police. There were more than a few problems with this purchase.

First Afghanistan is a landlocked country, but according to the report the boats could have been used on the Amu Darya River.

Second, nine months after the purchase, NATO forces decided it was a mistake, but the purchase had already been made.

And third the report states the boats were purchased for $375,000 apiece when the cost for similar models is $50,000.

Now the boats sit in a storage yard in Virginia.

"The list of unanswered questions is troubling....this program had been an important national security priority for the Afghan Security Forces prior to it's cancellation" the report said.

This latest example of government waste is in addition to $80 million spent on a new consulate that was determined to be unsafe, and another $34 million for a new military headquarters that remained empty, and was never used.

Well, they might as well have the boats so they can transport their cliff divers to the hospital ...
