A Geronimo, the Apache. Taken at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. I've been to his grave many times... Dude had like 7 wives buried next to him!
Naw, Skippy, I don't believe that pic was taken at Ft. Sill. There's a few taken of Jerry at Ft. Sill and you're probably thinking of one of them. (As official POW's at Ft. Sill, the Apaches wouldn't be posing with rifles.) Did you check out the 'Geronimo Guardhouse' at Ft. Sill? There seems to be a popular misconception that Geronimo was locked up in this, pacing a rut in the rock floor his whole time there at Sill, but not true. He had his own place, had a little truck garden, and pretty much allowed the run of the place. About the only time he spent in the guardhouse was to sleep off a drunk.

Stumbling Bear, Kiowa. Probably a Soule pic, taken about 1867. The bow and arrow are most likely studio props. The coat was given to him by General Hancock. A closer translation of his Kiowa name would be 'bear that knocks you down'. He had a horse for fights that he trained to run headlong into an enemy's horse, knocking horse and rider to the ground. I like it cause I'm related to him. His great, great, great, great grandson is my brother. (One or two greats one way or the other, and it's 'Indian Way', which is binding as blood, and I will not explain 'Indian Way' right now. There are good things about that and bad things too.) One story that has been passed down in the family, which may be true or not, concerns the Ute tribe. When nothing else was going on around home, young Kiowa men from the southern plains would mount an expedition against the Utes in the Colorado Mountains. Count coup, steal horses, women, children, just mainly raise old billy hell with their sworn enemies. On one such outing, Stumbling Bear snuck into a teepee and scalped a sleeping Ute. Unknown to him at the time, the Ute survived the scalping and lived. Many years later, before Stumbling Bear died, the Kiowas decided to meet and make a formal peace with the Utes. Here is where you have to understand Indian reasoning and idea of a joke. The meeting was held in the Oklahoma Panhandle. The Utes thought 'Hah! They still fear us enough not to come into our actual country'. The Kiowas said 'Damn, that's a long way up there to Colorado. Make those fools travel down here to meet us on our ground.' The Kiowas had the last and best laugh, as the Ute who had been scalped was attending this council. As a binding token of peace and the eternal friendship between the two tribes, Stumbling Bear stepped forward and returned the taken scalp back to the Ute! I heard that story in Kiowa and translated into English by Stumbling Bear's descendants. You hear family tales that you know are pretty far fetched. But if that one ain't true historical documentation, it really oughta be. And I apologize for rambling on too long there.

Some will remember. Who dat??

On page 18 Escape posted this picture of Hopalong Cassidy, and I noticed the neckerchief slide.
1.jpg
I have one that is like it, only beaded. It's made from the backbone of some critter, if I ever knew
I've forgotten.
1A.jpg
Here's Hoppy's enlarged a bit, and below is mine, given to me by my grandfather back when I was a cub scout and needed a neckerchief slide.
2.jpg
I was a cub scout in the 40's, and grandpa had it before that, so I have no idea of the age, except to say I bet it's close to 100 years old.

Here is a picture of the Rogue River, flowing west. From this point it is the Wild and Scenic Rogue River. No roads beyond this point for many miles. There is lots of gold
been found along this river, and I know a guy that found a cannon on a sand bar in the river. Shouldn't say that, the fellow I knew passed away, and I don't know who has the gun now. I know Ivan used to shoot it before he passed away. The river enters the ocean at Gold Beach, OR. I've never been through this wilderness section, but I have been up stream from Gold Beach on the historic mail run. There is a road now, but they still deliver the mail by boat, and down stream to this point in a jet boat from Grants Pass, OR.
