    Cicadas Are Edible

Periodical cicadas are also edible. Native Americans utilized them in their diet. In 1990, several college students were filmed eating them alive. When asked what they tasted like, the students reported that they tasted like almonds. Drying them in a microwave oven carefully causes them to release an almond smell.

Yum. Eat them all now, and in 17 years you won't have this problem.

Are cicadas the same thing as locus, or are they a defferent?
I've dug a bunch of them up from the dirt while detecting, but haven't see too many hanging around... Might have to do some google'ing on it later...

We had a version of these last year. Not many near my area, too developed since the eggs were hatched. Just south of us and east where I work, there were millions. Loud as heck, too.

We will have the 13 year variety next year,

    Good pics, thanks for sharing.

P.S. I hear they are good dipped in hot mustard.

Wow, I have never seen that many in one place. There give me the creeps because I never know when they will jump or fly..Cicadas and grasshoppers. Both give me the creeps.
I think locust is another name for the grasshopper. Not sure though.

They have yet to surface in the Fox Valley Region yet. I know that they have emerged at The Brookfield Zoo, we were there last Sunday and they were starting to come out and play. They creeped me out last time they emerged, they fly around as if they were drunk.

    Re: 17 year cicadas pics

which begs the question, are Katydids tasty too :P Being a chef and all, I have a couple more 'juicy' bits of information... cockroaches...when poached, taste like salmon; when grilled, they taste like lobster. Why? They're in the same family (as lobster, not salmon). Talk about gross! And no, I don't have this first hand. Only in the MOST desperate, live-or-die situation...maybe... Oh, and I hear sauteed meal worms with garlic are great on toast. Maybe Mamageorgio would know what to do with all these...treats
Thank you, God, for this good day.  Wonder what the sea spits out today!
