My first sail plain/glider flight. Can't explain it.

No need to explain it. I understand.

"And so the population was gradually led into the demoralising temptations of arcades, baths, and sumptuous banquets. The unsuspecting Britons spoke of such novelties as 'civilisation', when in fact they were only a feature of their enslavement." Tacitus, Roman Senator and Historian, written AD 98.

I understand that it can be quite peaceful and quiet while your up there soaring. Especially when you have some good updrafts.

Not really. Air noise is loud but maybe different for other designs. And an updraft is more like a bubble. Like boiling water where the bubble forms on the bottom and rises. When the bubble reaches the plane it can be heard and felt, like an impact which it is.
    Just that much more fun.
We were under cumulus clouds and that might have added to a more aggressive bubbles. The air coming down from the cloud was very cold. I don't know. I guess I need to go again.

Still sounds like an exhilarating and fun thing to do.

In New Mexico there is an airport that is known by sailplane pilots as one of the best for thermals. Moriarty NM Altitude is over 7000' if I remember.
From what's said the thermals and weather are very dependable.
