I just finished putting a new battery in my friend's Excalibur 1000. Next, the headphone cable is - basically dry rotted - in several spots right up to the strain relief that plugs into the unit.

does that cable unscrew and pull out from the chassis or is it hard-wired? E.g. can I unplug it, fix it or buy a new cable? I don't have any experience running the Excalibur but it's construction doesn't impress me in the least. For what I've seen so far, I would't buy a minelab over my DFX

thanks in advance

Welcome to treasurenet.

You will need to purchase new headphones and have them installed. Stock headphones are $175 plus labor to replace, you have to drill out the end cap, feed new headphones cable through then poor resin in the hole and let it set, then solder the wires to the motherboard.

There are other options over stock headphones too. I have three different types on my machines. I like the Grey Ghost Amphibians the best, with Tony Eisenhowers custom phones next best. (He installs too) The stock ones just sound a bit tinny to my ears.

Several ways of going about this, and it's amounts to how handy you are. No soldering to the mother board is needed for headphone replacement. If they have the Excalibur II yellow ground wire it's not needed, (Cut it off) and in my opinion useless.

Option 1. Buy a m12 endcap from the, Detector Center (814-283-4270) and buy a set of GGA's with the M12 male fitting. Pull the endcap then install..that easy. They sell the GGA's also.

Option 2. If you want to install on the stock endcap, just pull the black shrink wrap cover off. then the 2 allen set screws. Think it takes a 3mm allen wrench.

Purchase the GGA's or Tony's head phones..and install..

Option 3. replace the cord to the yellows..little harder but cheap.

Option 4. Pay someone else about 250 plus to do them

Joe, is there a way to install a waterproof connector so that you can switch out headphones at will, or is that not advised. Should they just be hard-wired and forget it ? TIA

thank you! I have to be honest....that's not the build quality I would expect for a 1500 detector.......

How old is the detector and how much use has it had? How has it been washed and stored. There are many reasons for cable insulation failure.....not just substandard materials.

Cables on excal should be rinsed under hot water after use to wash off the salt residue, I put mine in hot shower on return. once dry spray them with a vegetable based silicone spray once a month. Silicone is a natural UV inhibitor and will help protect the cables.

I have done this to my excal cables for years with no issue. Never store the excal in a high heat environment such as garage or shed, heat is your enemy.

USA Service Center.. 814-283-4270 Allows you to replace the old endcap with a 8 pin M12 female fitting endcap so you can use the CTX Grey Ghost water proof head phones.

17350947_1345546355513280_510849834_n.jpg Just drill out the original endcap and put the fitting in with 2 part epoxy, then solder the 2 pin connector to the correct pins, then fill with epoxy..

This is the pinout for the m12 fitting that goes to the headphones, it would be the mate to the endcap fitting so you would have to line up the pins to the endcap fitting and solder.
