Post Office Department Button [updated: 1873 - 1893]

I found this button near a southern CA adobe that was built in the 1850s. Found a bit more information on it at a U.S. Post Office Postal History website:

Nice button. Still has alot of the gold gilt left on in. You may want to post in in the Today's Finds section someone should be able to ID it there.

Horstmann Brothers operated 1859 to 1893. These "brothers" are the sons of W H Horstmann working together after the founders death. They had operations in both New York and Philadelphia (5th and Cherry Streets). Many of these backmarks will date after the Civil War.

Nice button. I worked for the P.O. for 34 years and have a P.O. clerk's jacket with a patch that shows the Pony Express rider. It was given to me by a fellow worker that had worked for the P.O. for eons. But, it doesn't have that type of button.

    Hi Jim,

Kinda nice to review some of the older topics...I wish there was more activity on this California site.

That button sure looks good and I really like the before and after photos being so similar...really works.

    HH Joe
