So I got out last Sunday for a couple hours. Working on some new permissions but no one was home. Can't blame them, the day was just beautiful. I decided to hit a couple tree rows in the University area. The University owns a lot of land in the city that would be the oldest part of it. Several years ago the University started buying up the neighborhoods and tearing down the houses to clean up the area. We're talking whole city blocks. A lot of the houses were built in the mid 19th century and later. They have signs in front of every lot saying Property of University no trespassing, so I settle for the tree rows. I plucked the usual trash and clad. First find was a brass tag. I have found several of these but none ever have a company name on them. The second was the three leaf clover pin. Then I got a nice quarter tone and it sounded real good. I was hoping for a silver but pulled out a black, round object that was holed. When you pull something out of the ground and the dirt is stuck to it, you know it is old. Did some wiping and could make out an oval shape with an X in the middle. It also appeared to have a snake on it and man my mind starting racing. I was thinking maybe something Confederate, Civil Warish. Put it away and moved on. I then got a nice dime tone that was sounding off pretty good. I dug it and plucked a 1927 silver Merc. I pulled a couple wheats here and there and called it a hunt. I got home and cleaned up my finds. It turns out the black round object is an 1842 Canadian Half Penny made by the Montreal Bank. One website said it was a token, not even a coin. To me, it's a keeper. This coin was holed and worn as a necklace. The side with the Bank building is almost wiped clean and was the side that rubbed against the person's chest. I'll never know the story behind it. It is what it is and to me, it's a nice rescued relic. I thank you for reading and GL & HH.
