Found this old guy back in May of this year..at Hillsdale fairgrounds.
He came outta the ground in pretty good shape.
This older one from 1917 didn't fair to well. All depends on the soil in which they were lying. The back is pictured as well.
They are not that hard to find Duane. They just come in streaks it seems. Won't find any for a long time, then all of a sudden they start poppin up. Thats whats fun about this hobby. There is always a "first find" to find. First large cent, first 2 center, first seated. Then it goes to dates, then mint marks. Never find em all thats what keeps us going back. Never satisfied.
Anyway, like the quarters you found you also skipped the buffalos and went right to the V nickel. Cheater.
Here are a couple of Buffs I found this summer.
One is dateless the other is a '25.
They both came from the old fairgrounds in East Jordan.
Most the time I don't dig nickel signals because they net me so much trash at a site like old fairgrounds where the trash
is so thick. Every once in a while the machine locks on and sticks right there without fluctuating, so I dig.
This has netted these buffs, and my first pair of war nickels too.
ONLY USE THIS METHOD ONLY FOR DATELESS NICKELS! To get "The Red Out" and to bring dates up. Mix enough cider Vinegar and 1 tsp. salt to cover by 1/4 inch over your nickel in a shallow saucer or plastic butter tub. Place dateless nickel in solution, let soak for about 15 minutes, then remove and rinse. You may have to tilt your nickel at different angles to he light, but you will see a date. If not, repeat the process. This will also leave your red nickels with a battleship grey color, I usually place them in a stone tumbler for about 5 minutes, it shines them up like circulated nickels and if you leave them in too long, you may lose the date again. Someone has also said that worscheshire sauce will do the same, I don't know, cuz I haven't tried it yet.......NGE
Here are just a few of my "Bull Mooses" Buffalos, 27 that I could locate there are also 3 V nickels in pic. I know that I have 2 rolls of buffs stored away. I feel sorry for ya all, that you haven't found a ton of them like me, after all, I have been hunting for over 35 years........NGE
