I don't believe it - 1758 Reale!

Went out today in a light rain, to a farmhome that I had received permission at a couple weeks ago. Dug an IH first coin, then a couple clad. Got a weird hit at about 6-7 inches and out pops a very thin quarter sized coin. It is worn almost smooth although the date is very legible. Sorry, no pics till tomorrow nite, I know I'll have to prove it, wife out of town with the camera. The two IH's were 1866 and 1906. Soil was not kind to the '66.
Later i scanned the coin, not too bad. Will get better pics. ffd

nice scan, ok, so what exactly is this coin? I saw some 1758 reales online and the dates are at the top, or the lettering is different. I can't figure out what it is. awesome find again D!

Re: I don't believe it - 1758 Reale!

Assuming its a 1-real, it will be 20mm in diameter and weigh about 3.38 grams. The legend reads "VTRA QUE VNUM Mo" (for Mex. City mint) then the date. Good luck on deciphering which of the two types you have. One type had two royal crowns atop the pillars; the other had one royal and one imperial crown.
Little difference in their values. Great find NTL.

WOW WOW WOW WOW...Congrats knowing we were not even a country yet and how sparcely populated we were makes you wonder about the story behind that coin. I can imagine it being traded to a Chippewa for some skins or something.Awesome find.

Re: I don't believe it - 1758 Reale!

Congrats Duane!! They are out there but like yours the two I found were worn almost smooth. To me that shows that they were in circulation for a long time and used into the 1840s. Thats where I found the two I nabbed at 1840s home sites. Your large cent is coming soon. Nothin like finding a coin from the 1700s. Big time congrats.

Wow, that is a super find, Congrats! I believe Reale's were legal
tender in the U.S. until 1857.

Good luck,
HH.
