Final relics for '09 -- 12/07

Hi all:

With the snowy weather forecasts and Christmas looming, I knew this past weekend would be my last chance to hunt for quite a while. On Sat. I hit my new wheat field. It was a bit bleaker than last hunt, but at least the clover has finally died. The wheat stubble was still troublesome and proper gridding will have to wait until spring. I did find my first (huzzah!) thimble, even though it had lost the fight with the plow. I reshaped it later but it still isn't pretty. I also found another nice suspender buckle.....or as my 3YO daughter called it, "A hooker for farmer pants." :D

On Sunday I didn't have a lot of time but I wanted to hit my "relic field" at a local farm house once more. I had a good signal that pinpointed big and figured it was yet another mason lid. But since I was in the relic field I knew I had to dig and was happy to pull out a state farm insurance plate. This is the second one I've found so I know they can't be rare. I also found another dome button (several at this site) and a cool piece of coal. And my final .02 of clad for the year. ::)

It's been a fun year of MDing!

Nice final Anne! I have fender damage to my Monte Carlo...... After seeing the work you did on that thimble you may be able to help me! lol  :D.

Can you post a pic of the LC you dug this year? I did not end up with one so I have to admire yours. :icon_thumleft:

Watch them snow plows everyone! See where they transport and dump the overflow snow. Found a lot of clad at the beginning of the year doing that. Just my research tip of the day....

Bring her over, Mike. LOL I'll have to tell you about the time I disassembled our Outback's dashboard to find my SLQ that had slipped down inside.:tongue3: :tongue3: :tongue3: I have a second career ready if need be!

I think the thimble is aluminum so it was pretty easy to tweak although it did tear a bit. ffd set the bar pretty high with that beauty of a thimble he found a while back. :notworthy:

Will post my LC pic again. :)

Here she be....I have yet to top this coin. Found in a corn field, researched by Wallhangers, where homes had been back in the 1860's at least. I felt very fortunate to find it, as this spot had been hunted before.

Well Anne I'm jealous of that LC find, I have never hunted an open field. Sure would like to try tho....nice relic finds you made....I think you are right about that thimble being aluminum, I found one like that, it was smashed. Here's to a great season next year, tons of great finds to be had! HH, ffd

She sure is pretty Anne! congrats! That truly is a remarkable find!

I laughed out loud over you pulling the dashboard off looking for that SLQ. The day I dug that Marine medal I also recovered my one and only military button....... Well it went down the drain of the slop sink and I had the elbow, and straight pipe off and was heading to the craw space when my wife put a stop to it. LOL. She asked if I was crazy. My only response was I dont think so, why? lol :laughing9: The button was never seen again.

Sad to see the year coming to a close. One of my highlights of this year was watching you find that LC.

Very nice stuff Anne!

Dug my first LC this season, identifiable only by the faintest outline of the head. Your coin is in outstanding condition!! :icon_thumleft:

Congrats!

Nice finds, beautiful LC!

Looking at the before pic of your thimble my first thought was, I'd probably of
thrown that out not even knowing what it was.

Good luck,
HH.

Re: Final relics for '09 -- 12/07

I just saw this and saw no one had Id'd the two items. The one it the top pic is what the wick to a lantern went through. The two slots on the side were toward the bottom. There were 2 gear like pieces on the shaft to adjust the wick. The gear like pieces went in the holes and when you turned the shaft they would dig into the wick and turn it up or down.
The piece in the second pic is part of a clock that held the gears and things.
