My 1st Large Cent and a shackle......I think......
Hello everyone,
Had a good days hunt today. I was backroad driving and came across an outhouse in the middle of a field. I had to investigate that one right away. I knocked on a few local doors and buttoned down permission to begin the hunt. I noticed a lot of glass shards scattered all over. I ended up digging my oldest coin ever this afternoon. An 1817 Large cent. I was excited to see that. A large cent has always been on my wish list and now I can cross that one off. I still cant believe it. I followed it up with a silver thimble, (which I dropped back in the field by accident ) an 1859 Canadian Large Cent and what I believe is an old iron shackle. It has two holes on each end and one in the middle that I suspect may have been where the chain went. I'M not sure though. Can anyone confirm?

Excellent finds, xmarks! Your 1817 LC is an oldie and will be hard to beat. Love the Canadian LC, too. Congrats on your firsts! WTG

Congrats on your first. Looks like a 1847 but that may just be the photo.

Hi everyone, thanks for the id on the shackle looking thing. I had others say the same as you so I have to agree it is an auto part. Looking at the photo of the LC, I would also have to agree its a 47 and not a 17. Been waiting a long time for my Large Cent, so I'm happy without any disappointments. I went back to the field today to try my luck again and it was freshly plowed. Its gonna be a long wait until next spring.

Yeah its off limits because of the seeds. I told the guy I would not go out in it after he planted. He said he was planning on plowing real soon so, I would have to hit it pretty quick. I did not know soon was the next day though.
