Perhaps the oldest coin found in Vicksburg???
Nice, sunny, kids are off early from school and playing with friends-gotta get out there but only had about an hour. Let me just, few people say how much junk they dig up. Well today was pretty much all junk with the exception of two unlikely old foreign coins. Sure I have found some Canada pennies from 50s and 60s but today I dug up a 1916 large cent. Nice lookin' coin though not up on worth of it. Next foreign coin could be one of the oldest coins found in Vicksburg-please correct me if wrong-but at a mere 4 inches was a heavily soiled, patina copper of an odd size. At first I thought maybe a token, then I got all excited thinking it might be a civil war token. When I got home, I rinsed with warm water/soap and could see a date of 18XX. Further rinsing revealed 187X or is that 7 a 4? Into the hot peroxide. Ahh 1841, but the coin had no familiarity to it. upon several more cleanings I was able to google the darn thing. It is a 1/2 Shilling from Norway (Denmark according to one source). Apparently this particular coin was made for only three years 39, 40 and 41. I am still freakin' from today's hunt. Why am I doing so well in a month that I should not even be able to break ground Check out the pics.

Great digs! There has been some LC's found in the V-burg area that are from the 1820's and 30's. Congrats on the old shilling. The Canadian coin came our so clean.

Ya, I'm thinking the Canada LC was a recent drop. Looked good coming out of a shallow hole. I figured there had to be some older coins found than the 1841 half shilling. It is my oldest coin to date. Previously an 189X IHP...thanks for all your feedback, I love checking t the MI finds forum, gives me new ideas and a keen perspective of how others are doing. I'm not always successful and gives me a positive outlook when I read that someone has a good day playin' in the dirt.
