First Silver Rosie

Hello SE Michigan here.

Found this outside a park swimming pool that is nolonger in use. I cleaned it by lining a coffee cup with tinfoil(shiny side up) adding two tablespoons of baking soda and boiling water. It seems to get the tarnish off rather well, but coin seems kinda dullish in looks. How do you clean your silver coins? When I find something really good I might not clean it at all, but want to learn the best way to do it, without causing harm.

Nice rosie Bandb1! The way I clean my silver is with a non abrasive metal polish I found years ago, its called Blue Magic. I am not even sure its made anymore, but it does work miracles on coins especially silver. I only use it on non key date coins as I figuire I can't harm something thats not super valuable and I do love to make my silver shine like new. I'll try to post a pic of one I did in the Blue Magic

Congrats on your first Rosie. I was finding Mercs left and right but never seemed to find the rosie..took almost a year to break the spell. HH and welcome to TNet.

Congrats on your first rosie. The "mayor" method you used for cleaning the silver coin is really meant for corroded green blobs that are on copper coins. Silver the best way to go is electrolysis or using baking soda between your fingers and the coin while keeping the mixture a little wet. I only do this to silver coins that have black tarnish on em from being in wet ground. 90% of the silver I find I just rinse under the faucet and thats it. My two cents. Now go find a Merc to go with that rosie. Jim

I think until I get more experience and of course more coins(same thing?), I'll just rinse em off, or maybe use a little baking soda as suggested by Jim C. Although I do believe I have some silver polish around the house, if its non-abrasive, I just might try it out and see.

I just tried this stuff last nite, called CONNOISSEURS Silver Jewelry Cleaner.
It's a dip, with a small tray. My wife got it from Target, wow it works great. I used it to clean my bullion coins, and a couple were black with tarnish. They come out sparkling like an uncirculated coin. Rinse with warm water and dry with a cloth.
