Tried the old fairgrounds again this weekend. Since I had the new 5" coil I thought I may as well try the most junk filled area I knew of.
I think this is where they piled up all the old lumber etc. when they took out the buildings from the old fairgrounds. More nails, old electrical parts, parts of old light bulb bases etc than you can believe. Went slow with my Quattro, and found a 1913 wheatie, a 1935 wheatie, and my first "Buffalo Nickel". The date is completely worn off the nickel.
I know there is more silver hiding there, just couldn't connect with any this time. Maybe later. Some deep signals, but the ground is so dry, and since there is some clay in the soil.......... A jackhammer just doesn't seem appropriate.
The 1935 was so crusted I couldn't read the date. Rubbed some wet Barkeepers friend on with my fingers. I will try something a little less abrasive next time, it took it off way too quick!

WOW! What's in that Barkeepers fried, sulpheric acid? What do your fingers look like now?
We all know there's no such thing as a "hunted out" location. Let's stop using that phrase to describe a park out of which you just dug a pile of coins! Obviously that particular place wasn't "hunted out", right?

Laughing! My fingers are clean! It is like a very very mild form of cleanser. It is made to clean glossy surfaces without scratching them.
I tried it on the nickel and it was great. It took away the red and left the nickel clean and unscratched.
I use it to clean signs when there is a danger of damaging the paint or gloss surface on an expensive sign. I get it at the grocery store.
I couldn't believe it went after the penny so quickly. go figure.

It did a bang-up job on that wheat, I tell you what! Too damaging to use on anything valuable, but I may have to pick some up just to use on those so crusty you can't get a date from them.

Still finding silver too. Not filling my bag, but one or two silvers a week from early 1900 and late 1800s.
1885 Indian Penny last week.
Norwood area gave up an 1883 Indian last night. Just not for me.
Thanks again,
Mark
Mark,
Yeah, know what you mean about Norwood. My brother works with a guy that own s ahome there and I could easily get permission but there's that Archie guy that lives in the area and I prefer a low profile. I do have permission to hunt the old farmstead by the Cemetary South of Norwood, (if you know where I mean) :P Have hit it off an on over the years and gotten 3 Civil War tokens.

The farmstead sounds very cool. Good luck.

I think he meant Archeologist, not necessarily the name Archie.

Looks like your having a great time and making some nice finds! I just have to ask, I was looking at the pic of the buff nickle and it seems like from the picture that the buffalo is indented into the coin and not standing out from the coin? could be an optical illusion but it hit me kinda funny. A few tips for cleaning those nicer coins..... A hot peroxide bath does wonders for old copper coins, it will remove the grungies and not harm the coin. For the nickles try soaking them over night in Worchestershire sauce. Place the nickle in about 1/4 inch of sauce in a glass dish, not plastic! and cover with cling wrap, check it the next day and flip the coin to do the other side. you will be amazed at how it will make a terrible nickle look alot better and sometimes even make the date readable.

Thanks Slippery!
Yes, it is an optical illusion. The Buffalo is standing proud! I did clean the buffalo with Barkeepers Friend. It does a quick and amazing job on nickels etc. Not sure I would trust it on anything real good though. Check out Cleaning and Preservation for more on it.
Haven't tried getting the coins "sauced" yet, but will try that on the next finds.
