Re: First Merc.
Hello and thank you all.
It was quite a kick finding this, it was my first coin dug last friday, a rather nice surprise.
It is rather worn down but less so than I thought it was before I cleaned it up.
There still is some tarnish on the back, but I decided enoughs enough, that is until or whether
I decide to do the electrolysis thing. (I don't think I want to make my own electrolysis thingy
even though I do have the stuff to do so, electricity and water kinda scares me.)
The back of it looked like it was covered in tar, I think a wicked combination of tarnish and dirt. The front was slightly tarnished and I could read the date right off the bat. I placed it in tinfoil with salt for about two days, and gently wiped with tissue paper, this got about 90% of the tarnish of. But I grew impatient, and since it was obviously rather worn, I gently and briefly rubbed it with moist baking soda, but left the bit of tarnish on the back since I didn't want to rub it too much in such a manner.
Good luck,
HH.

Re: First Merc.
Good job on what will hopefully be your FIRST but not last Merc.
I love finding them no matter what condition they are in.

Re: First Merc.
I agree mastereagle, the concept of when it was matters to me, in 1917 my grandfather was in europe fighting in the war. He was a very religous man (sorry , I'm not) , and was a pacifist , he went over the top ( of the trenches) several times and never fired his rifle due to his beliefs,( unlike sargaent York, whom I admire.)
Good luck,
HH.

Re: First Merc.
What I find odd about the winged Liberty is that so many are found, compared to the silver Roosevelt dime. It makes no sense to me at all. The second time out with my detector I found a Merc. One wouldn't expect to find so many of a depression-era coin.
