These are the finds from the last 2 days of hunting in the woods.

My spouse found the iron cross.
I found a BUNCH of shotgun headstamps, I just tossed those, I already have many of those.
The unidentified metal objects were too many to display too.

We are also up to three of these found:


Are these seismograph hole covers?
I assume they put a charge down in that hole, and hook up geophones to look for oil?
I know these would be the "old school" versions of this.
Anyone got any ideas?

Those hole covers are interesting.
Those square nails look old. I would suggest going back to wherever you dug those.
You may be ontop of an old homestead. Look for high ground and water.
Maybe even a well.

The "covers", are they heavy cast, or thinner sheet metal? I'd agree, site looks like it'd be worth exploring more, especially if more square nails turn-up.

Is that a coin, under the 1st nail (on the left)?

They caps are HEAVY duty. They have been in the ground for a while.
This type of exploration has been going on for a long time I have heard.
That hole along the edge of it is where they ran the fuse/cap I assume.

We found LOTS more hand-forged nails in this section, these were just some of the better ones.
It is hard to believe I have not found a coin since the two pennies the other day (and they were about 300 yards away from this site).
The rumor is there was a grist mill about 3/4 mile to the east of this location.
The area is very difficult to detect. Some of the brier bushes are deadly.
There is a thick pine needle/leave mulch before you get to solid earth.
Vines run along the floor too, so you are constantly getting hung up.
There is no way you could use a big coil here, the 5x8 gets hung frequently.

I dry tumbled the metal with some tumbling media last night.
I will look at it this a.m. to see what those mystery circular items are, I don't think they are coins though.
UPDATE: that was a button, not a coin (really corroded too).
I am going to tumble that stuff with some conklin gel to see if it gets that bigger disk any cleaner.

Conklin really cleaned up the brass and copper stuff, but that old corroded disk seems to be about the same.
Went out today, and hit the old football field, and the only good find was a 1953d wheat penny.
I am done with the field, I need to head onto the old playground now.
