Checking out a new permission today, my son kept getting a strong iron signal on his Ace 350. Not a lot of trash in the area so he dug it. The first steel wheat penny I think I have seen.
A steel wheat coming out of the ground in that condition? Completely amazing to say the least. I could possibly see it in the desert but in Mississippi? Incredible.
Son is 19. Coin was found in a covered area of an an old barn. If it had been out in the open subjected to the rain I'm sure it wouldn't have been identified
Wow, following that link that flyadive posted, I now know about another rare penny....the '44 steel penny. I imagine it would be a really hard find though, being steel and all...
The steel penny was coated with zinc and had a steel core, millions were struck during the war. When I was a kid the 1943 steel pennies were very common. Now the 1943 copper pennies are worth a lot of money. There are only 15 known to exist
Yep, and according to the article I linked, there were a few steel pennies that mistakenly carried over into 1944, when copper was supposed to be used again. So a steel 1944 penny is rare too.
