How Lucky Does It GET? CZ21 & Minelab Xtera-70 $75!!
Went to the gun show in Tampa, Fl and a guy had two "New" detectors for trade. They are a Fisher CZ-21 and a Minelab X-Terra 70. I figured he would make a deal for either one plus a little cash. I asked him what kind of deal he wanted and he said he would trade "both" for my rifle and a pocket knife I had. As you guessed my mouth dropped to the floor and made the deal after making sure that both were in good working order. (Would have traded even if they did'nt work!!!!) He traded me both detectors for a rifle I only had $75 in! Only problem is the Minelabs' coil mounting lugs broke off "but" will be an easy fix!

Very nice. With spring right around the corner you could make a real nice profit on the CZ21.

Don't ever get rid of the CZ-21 unless you need to pay off the house.

I know the individual personally. He worked five years as a diver, for a treasure salvager, and mfg's gives them these detectors for reviews. He's been a detectorist for about 35 years. They had no boxes and have been sitting in his closet unused.

man if you know the guy and that the gear isn't hot --you made the deal of the year -- the cz 21 is a real keeper for florida use at the beach. (dry land too)
the minelabs not bad either fix its minor issues and easily turn a good profiet on the deal , by selling it.

Re: How Lucky Does It GET? CZ21 & Minelab Xtera-70 $75!!
Maybe my deal just went South! I wrapped the coil cable around the shaft last night and put the detector in the car. I thought I might give it a few swings to see how it worked. This morning, when I got to the site, I took it out and the cables' rubber sheathing came apart in about thirty places. I guess it dry rotted from non-use. Used it anyway, in the default settings, and seems to work pretty good. I just downloaded the manual and gonna do some reading. Don't know what it's going to cost to get a new cable put on the coil and on into the box. Anyone ever paid to have that done? See if I can't post a couple pics later this evening.

I would send that cz in for a new coil. After that, you still got a good deal with a machine that should fetch 6 or 7 hundred bucks if you ever decide to part ways with it.

I called Fisher and they said the coil cable was not repairable! Have to buy new coil with labor and shipping. New coil is $140 and guessing labor another $40. I'm hopeing $200 will "git-r-done!"

fix up and sell the minelab for $300 bucks to cover your $75 bucks invested and $200 or so in "repair cost" for both units. -- that way your money is back in your pocket back and a free -- totally serviced fisher is in in hand.
still not a bad deal that way.

Re: How Lucky Does It GET? CZ21 & Minelab Xtera-70 $75!!
Due to fact that I don't do any underwater detecting, scuba, I was thinking of cutting the coil cable, removing the old rotted cable sheath and using plastic tubing for the outer sheath. I would solder the wire leads and RTV both ends to seal the water out. Any constructive opinions?

Go to the local electronics store and get some heat shrink tubing. I've bought it in lengths up to 4ft. The marine grade has a melt liner in it that completely waterproofs it. Just remove the cable connector, slide on the heat shrink and heat it to shink it, overlap it if its not long enough. Cable will be a little stiffer than the original, but still wrapable. Worth a try anyways..

Think I might try using clear tubing, the sort used on aquariums. This will make it easy to wrap around shaft and will allow for mounting the box on a belt. If I ever have the need to sell it or want to use it for underwater use I would most assurably have a new coil mounted and pressure tested.

Re: How Lucky Does It GET? CZ21 & Minelab Xtera-70 $75!!
If that was my detector I'd just buy some more cable (or insulated singles) plus connectors, run a section of it through plastic tubing, and rewire it all together at the connections in and between the coil and the box - with two waterproof pin plugs connecting at each place. Once you've done it the first time it's a piece of cake the next time. Then use a product called "Flexibleseal" found at some hardware stores and EVERY roofing Supply store. The product is guaranteed for 25 years and is ABSOLUTELY WATERPROOF, and it's better than silicone ever was or will be. And yes, I've done it before a few times.. www.flexibleseal.com

Re: How Lucky Does It GET? CZ21 & Minelab Xtera-70 $75!!
I opted to use clear plastic tubing and run the original wires up thru the tubing. I removed the coil wire nut and siliconed real well under the nut to ensure that no moisture will seep into the coil. (I hope!) I will make my soldered connections by the control box, about 8" out of the box, and seal as I did on the coil. Just got finished sealing the coil end and should be dry in about three or four hours. Gonna take some pics today and post later for those interested. As second insureance I think I might try some of that "FlexSeal" on both ends. Looks like it's gonna work pretty good!
