    Flamingo Lodge, Florida Everglades... gone

I was reading an article in the paper concerning the lodge. It is located within the Everglades National Park. I've never been there before.

The lodge was destroyed by hurricanes in 2005. The place was supposed to be rebuilt with federal stimulus money to tune tune of $20 million. Well, it's not going to happen according to the article, so the lot will remain empty.

Does anyone know any of the park rangers there? Could the hotel grounds be 'tected, for cleaning of trash (and coins) while staying out of hallowed federal lands?

The original building went up in 1959 I believe. Might be some interesting finds from over the years.

Been there a couple of years ago, and it was quite spartan. I would consider it more as a dormitory and not so much as a lodge. There is a very active marina/boat launch there. Good luck on getting permission. I doubt there will be much there as whenever I went to the marina there was only a few German tourists ever there at the lodge. Most people stayed in Homestead and drove in. It's actually a miracle that it had remained for so long so close to the water.

It never hurts to ask but I assure you the answer will be no. MD'ing in a National Park, Monument, Seashore, etc., is a no no. Contrary to common belief, none of these areas were preserved for the purpose of "saving" them for future generations to enjoy. Each has it's own special reason for being blocked off from development.
