We have known for sometime that State Parks were off limits, but today I found out that State forests are as well. In fact you can not even dig a hole on State Forest lands, with or without a metal detector in your possession, for any reason.
I know where an old canoe, built by Spaniards, was found about 40 years ago on the Withlacoochee River. Could possibly have been part of Desotos party from the 1500's. It was almost completely preserved because it was buried in the sand under the river. I had thought that I would return to the site to see if any metal artifacts could be found in the same area. At the point where it was found the river is only about 5 feet deep and less than 25 feet across, so hunting would have been fairly easy.
But no, I made the mistake of asking the forest service about their rules regarding metal detectors. So much for that idea. Seems like now almost all public lands are going to be off limits to us, except the beaches.
