Hey Bill.....When you say "Staunton River"What river are you referring to ? The only rivers under SML that I know of is the Blackwater & Roanoke.
HA! NOT Bill... Staunton & Roanoke River created SML by being damed (SML Dam); Blackwater was ONLY a creek. Read history of Smith Mountain Lake...

LOL! Blackwater River (from Franklin County) joined Roanoke River to make it ONLY the Roanoke River that the Power Company damed up. A certain section of Roanoke River was named Staunton River in honor of a Capt. Staunton in earlier days, when THAT section bordered Campbell County; yes Campbell County was HUGE! Part of Bedford County came from it. DYK? New London, Va. (now in Campbell County, near Lynchburg, Va.) was once capital of Bedford County? LATER, the town of Liberty (now, Bedford City) is. ANYWAY, back to MONROE, Va. under SML.

Even the web-site on Monroe, Va. has "The River" indicated as STAUNTON RIVER; Monroe, Va. was planned to have 28 lots to be sold so ppl on "The River" could buy & build, on streets, such as... Spring Street, Green Street, Brown Street, Commerce Street, Rives Street, & Powell's Alley. Commerce Street was meant to be MAIN STREET... ALL on paper; NOTHING happened. A Post Office was called Monroeton (1823-1837 or so); it MAY have been in Campbell County "crossing into" Pittsylvania County, dunno. "The residential development called Vista Pointe (TODAY) could perhaps be sitting on or near what was a Monroe (Va.) town lot." The underwater Rt. 626 was once known as Monroe Road (19th Century maps).

Wife & I were in Barnes & Nobles (Books) here in "The Burg", today; found a book on Pittsylvania County (BRIEF HISTORY OF PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY), & it had a map from 1820's or so... MONROE was on it, and "THE RIVER" is shown as BLACKWATER RIVER... (SHOCK!) with ANTHONY'S FORD. ALL of which is near the SML Dam/R2 "section", off of Vista Pointe... WOW! THAT IS the DEEPEST part of SML...
