    Interesting Formation

    I've been studying this area for a while now, but found a striking example of the strata in this location today:



    The topmost bed is benthic limestone (shallow sea floor) rock where I've been finding most of my brachiopods, crinoids and other marine fossils.? Note the coal seam immediately below it.? To gain some sense of scale the coal seam is about a foot think.? Far below the coal seam I discovered this ancient beach:



    Here's the same strata about over a mile south:




    Pretty interesting so I thought I'd share it!

    Sort of looks like ripple marks from the photo. Are those in sandstone or just a photo illusion?

    No sandstone in this formation at all that I can see. The ripple marks are in shale or a mudstone type rock.

    Hehe, yeah and it hasn't seen a fish in a while now. Of course, it's kind of hard to catch one when the line isn't even in the water!
