Could you be more specific? What state or region of the country? If you are in or near SW Ohio I would be more than happy to take you out collecting the local Ordovician.
If you give me a particular state I would be able to be a little more helpful. Let us know.

You can dig for free in the Peace River in Polk, Hardee, Desoto & Charlotte Counties. My daughter and I met you on Miami Beach a year ago, come on over we will show you how to dig and find fossils!!

Penn Dixie, upstate NY. There is a fee. I was a member - one year membership was $35, I'm not sure what the daily fee is. Great site for trilobites. I took my kids and had a great time - found a bunch of great trilobites and marine fossils. Website is http://www.penndixie.org/

Bulgarian. Ruccello is correct. Penn Dixie is a great Devonian site that is open to the public. I will be up this spring sometime. Below is a link to a piece that I found there 6 years ago.

Ruccello - Thanks, I just went to the website you provided. Apparently daily fee is $7 for adult and $6 for kids. The park is already open for the 2011 season !!!
Chuck - That was an awesome find ! Wow

I hope to visit this Wyoming site this summer or fall. Looks interesting if a bit off the beaten track. They supply all you need, kids are OK and they charge by the hour, half day or full day.

Our quarries are located near Kemmerer, Wyoming - home of Fossil Butte National Monument. Warfield Fossil Quarries are part of the Green River Lake system, and are located in the Fossil Lake Basin.
The fossils found in the Green River Foundation are between 40-60 million years old (Eocene Age), and are in excellent preservation. After collection, the fossils are cleaned and prepared in our studio 120 miles north of the quarry in Thayne Wyoming.
We specialize in the collection and preparation of fossils for private and public collections world-wide.

It is always of the utmost importance that collectors be fully respectful of private property rights, and adhere to all laws and /or rules. One bad apple can ruin it for everybody...
Certain collecting areas might present special safety concerns. Collectors should carefully assess if their physical condition, level of preparedness, or choice of clothing or footwear might pose any special risks. This is especially true
