Here's another one of my "what's its". I thought it was just a fossil of ripples in the sand but something about it looks different. One thing is that there is a spongey layer right under the "ribs". Another thing is that I would expect the tops of the ripples to be worn flat over time but the low areas in between are flat as well. The other thing is that in one photo you can see where one "rib" is broken away from the rock under it. The tiles I took the photo on are 4" across for reference. Oh, and the whole thing is slightly curved like a rib cage. Found in an area of shallow sea creatures : barnacles, sand dollars, some turtle coprolite, etc. There were whale bones found near the same area.

Have you ever been to the lake where the wind pushes waves op on the shore,
As the wind dies down the waves are lower and farther down the bank.
This action leaves ripples in the mud on the shore.

It happened millions of years ago as well, what you have is a piece of fossil mud.

Simply put.

I just spent a whole day collecting some larger pieces for my wife to use as flaggstones in a sidewalk.

really beautiful when you can find fossilized rain drops.
fossilized mud waves are cool too...you are looking at the ground
from a LONG time ago. Keep looking, maybe you will find a footprint.

Cruisin,

My brother in law has a piece of this type stuff that is of a reddish mudstone with these waves, I have been trying to talk him out of it... LOL.
It has water bird tracks in it along with the waves in the mud.
It is all of two feet by three feet and about 1 1/2 inches thick.
very cool,
