Hi everyone.

Newbie here in need of assistance. I know nothing about this kind of stuff and my hobby lies more towards treasure hunting. With that said me and my girlfriend stumbled on this neat find on my great grandparents land in central WV.
Measuring 7 inches in length and 5 inches at the base I have what "looks" to be a leaf. The area was recently dug for natural gas and runoff rain water from the pad on a hill has revealed some neat things this being one of them.
The item is solid and heavy. Curious if anyone has any ideas ?

Looks like it could be brass. If you own a thing called a metal detector, swing it over it. Never mind. Congrats on an old find.

That would make sense, Girlfriend THINKS its possibly a fern from hundreds of years ago as we do have alot of ferns growing on the property. I think its really cool and am hoping I have something.. My own little exhibit.LOL

Is it rock or not? Can you scratch it with your fingernail? It looks like the core of a tree cone that has been split lengthwise. From the cracking evident in your second pick, it looks like waterlogged material ( wood ) that's beginning to dry out. Are there any pines around your area with the giant cones?

Looks like the remnants of a decayed tree. I've found several during walks in the wood...... cool find.
