Detecting in the 28/78 - looking for old maps of the regions if possible

Hey guys I'm eagerly anticipating the arrival of my Tesoro Compadre Pro today, so I'll hopefully be able to start detecting at the beginning of next week (I have odd shifts). I've asked my local mayor for permission to detect the public areas/green spaces in town but I'd love to know more, especially who owns the land for particular properties, for example, and what the land was used for back in the day. Also, if anyone has been detecting in the 28 or 78 I'd love to hear what you found so I can get an idea of what to expect

UPDATE - I wasn't given permission, an aide at the mayor's office said they can't give permission to anyone just like that... that reason sounds a little spurious to me, though, should I follow up on it?
