    I have also dropped into the fur trade era looking to learn. I think you are correct on the shape. I found this axe on a known island Indian village site that traded with whites. It is identical to one in books of artifacts. I also think that they were used by settlers as well. I guess it can all be speculation but it is a style that was used in trading with native americans,,,,, lol how is that??

    Yep, they are trade axes based on their shape. They were used as both tools and as weapons. The round, slightly tapered eye was so they could cut a branch down and fit it easily to their axe head. They never came with handles, buyer was supposed to whittle his own. They usually have no hammer poll, blades come out a a 90 degree angle and the bottom of the blade comes out around 135 degrees.
