What were "Trade Broaches" used for?

This is a previous find and thanks to Ia.FurTrade(Dale), I know this is an "Indian Trade Broach", but was wondering what it was used for? How was it worn?
I also found an old bell about five feet from this and wondered if the Indians might have used it, too?
This was an amazing find for me since I'm in Oklahoma and I know all you "Fur Trade Artifact" collectors/finders are from up North(Iowa, Wisconsin, ect). Thanks in advance for any help and info you might have! regards, sandcreek4

Sandcreek4, These brooches were worn in rows on their clothing for decorations. The bell appears to be a "hawk" (so-called) bell that they also worn for decoration & sound (they also wore the "tinklers" for the same reasons).
As your brooch appears to be silver plated instead of solid silver I would assume it is from at least the 2nd. half of the 1800's. ( All three items are still being made today.)

Thank so much Dale! That is just what I wanted to know! The place where I dug them up is from the late 1800's. Kind regards, sandcreek4

I would have to say that your broach is silver, but the pin is definitely not.
Bell is a "hawks bell" and also associated with Native Americans. I would hunt around that area quite a bit more if I was you.

    Excellent finds!!!

Thanks for that info, A. Grignon! We have hunted this spot quite a bit but might go back and see what else we can find. I also found an Indian police uniform button (U.S. Indian Department) at this site. So, I am assuming these people were "Native Americans", (if only these things could talk!). It has been a great history lesson for me and my kids and made us interested in the "Fur Trade" era!! kind regards, sandcreek4
