    Hammer Poll Tomahawk

I've been posting this everywhere hoping someone has seen one like it. I found it in an old French area where trading with the natives was common. I'm thinking hammer poll tomahawk but I really have no idea.

    Re: Hammer Poll Tomahawk

    Hi,

Very very nice find! The definition of a hammer poll tomahawk is a bit loose as far as what some people call it but usually the polls are much longer on those. Its hard to come up with clear definition of one that everybody agrees with. I have seen this pattern frequently before and they are called more frequently 'belt axes' or 'hammer poll hatchets' which would have been used as both a tool and/or a weapon worn by hunters, Indians, trappers, etc. could have been thrown in battle & also used to quarter a deer in the bush, that sort of thing. You can find similar examples in the book Swords & Blades of the American Revolution & the book Indian Tomahawks & Frontiersmen Belt Axes by Hartzler & Knowles.
