i called this the antique appraisers' challenge on my Dumpdiggers blog

Its a simple exercise: if I show you a five antiques from the same building could you identify the very best one?

Chair

Dresser
21045910455_01786721e4_m.jpg

Sculpture
21035960212_52fd8f5a4a_m.jpg

Original painting by unknown Canadian artist,
21045913935_c16d5887c5_m.jpg

or a reproduction of Claude Monet's Seine at Giverny 1885

Oak-room-monet1.jpg

I wrote about this reproduction fine art on Glenerin Inn & Spa blog: The Monet in The Grand Sunroom

So which would you chose? What is the best antique on the property? And by how much?

Though I personally Like the Chair

20423267734_d1e268d6b8_b.jpg

it looks like a Mutt.
like it is Made from several different pieces of furniture.

The bottom looks like part of a magazine Rack
the Seat a Barrel.
the rest :dontknow:

the Monet is Blah to me ! very Boring !

the Northern Lights painting (St Elmo's Fire ?) is cool

and some Dressers can bring allot of Money.

But I still think the Chinese Sculpture is the High Priced item

All interesting! I'm not good at this!:laughing7:

The chair looks cool! I don't really know anything about it! But it stands out as something that might appeal to a bunch of different buyers! So I'm going to guess that, just to take a guess as most valuable! :laughing7:

The dresser or hutch, Still very cool and would be my personal pick, I use to collect that type of stuff. I like the claw type feet! Even kind of looks like tiger oak from the pic. some had tops with carvings and mirrors, shelves.

I know nothing about art! I like the picture with the fire!

Sounds like fun! I'll take a guess... with the most valuable as #1, and the least as #5.

1. Sculpture
2. Chair
3. Dresser
4. Unknown canadian artist painting. The painting, (I'm assuming here), is of the Northern Lights.
5. Reproduction painting.

That's my guess! (laughing)

The well worn dresser= # 1 for me. (If dresser is accepted as correct description by a buyer ,so be it.)
Of course buyer demand and method of disposal factor immensely in any value.
An example being a painting outside of known valuables might sell best at a gallery ,the profit hit hard by commission.
The chairs provenance would need to be known for myself to even start with a value on it. The stain in seat center is a deterrent from assigning greater potential...:icon_scratch:
The back is questionable as to originality too.

It could be ancient... Didnt the Chinese invent bar codes?

I'm kind of glad! That thing was ugly anyhow! :laughing7: Sorry, but looks like something I made for my mom in school. But I was actually trying to make a cat and that is what I would have ended up with!:laughing7:I'm jkg!

I was thinking late 1960's early 70's period.

"MOD"

Age doesn't necessarily dictate Value to Some

We all realize that there is no way to determine this because value is in the eye of the buyer... If bill gates daughter wants the china statue it is the most valuable to them. Value is just not monetary. You need to try to define what value is ??? LOL

Hard to guess between the curule chair and the sideboard (not dresser) with these photos but they would be my two top choices based on the lack of details available on both of those objects.

the curule chair ? hmm that's an interesting word.. Curule cu·rule
ˈkyo͞oro͞ol/
adjectivehistorical

adjective: curule

  • denoting or relating to the authority exercised by the senior magistrates in ancient Rome, chiefly the consul and praetor, who were entitled to use the sella curulis (‘curule seat,’ a kind of folding chair).

hey I learned something!

And 'sideboard' - thanks to ALL who straightened me out there

These two items would be my choices, with the sideboard being first as it has lovely tiger wood finish while the chair looks cobbled together ie the back piece

OVERALL, This was a fun and informative exercise. Do you think it would make a good TV game show? or maybe interactive web content?
At any rate, we should do this more often...
